On a 2001 Dodge Ram 4X4 with a 46RE is the trans the same as a 2 wheel drive????? What years fit this truck and what no?
Except for the O/D unit they are the same.

I assume that the over drive unit is in the trans??? Mine is over drive!

What is different is the tail housing and output shaft, a 4x4 has the mounting holes because the transfer case bolts onto the end of the transmission. The 2wd goes straight to a slip yoke. The rest of the internals are the same.
You can take the transmission apart and swap over the output shaft and tail housing into a 4wd tranmission to convert it to a 2wd or vice versa.
You only need to swap the O/D unit (essentially just the tailshaft) on a 46RH or 46RE.
