OD 833 thoughts? - 05/20/16 05:38 AM

Well after a long delay, I am finally going to start on my 84 D100 truck here within the next month. Its a 318 with a od 833 tranny. I am going to put a stout 360 in it. My question is can the tranny hold up to some spirited driving? By that I mean some drag strip use and a occasional burnout. If I was to put a regular 833 tranny in the truck, could I use the shifter, rods etc.. that I have now? Any help would be appreciated!

Yes, I think it will hold up to some fun. I ran one behind my 383 in a roadrunner.

Yes, don't believe the hype that they won't hold up.

I know a Guy who's been running one in a 511 Six Pak B-body for years and it's still going strong.

I'm beating on two of them at the moment.

And, if you wreck it, $100.00 for another and away you go again.

Best kept secret in the Mopar world, and that truck you have is a bit of a rare animal (OD small block bellhousing up )

They hold up fine as long as you don't run slicks.

Ok thanks, I will just run the od. When I swap motors, would it be possible to install the motor and tranny together from the top as one unit?

Yes there is plenty of room. You could get one of the harbor freight engine levelers for the engine hoist to make it easier.

the first and second gear is about as strong as any 4 speed but three and four are weak because their position on the mainshaft is switched---if the bulk of your runs are in 1-2 you are good---be firm at 3 then let off it in 4......

".....Yes, don't believe the hype that they won't hold up......"

I've got a cracked aluminum case from A833 OD transmissions under the bench and have come across a couple of more cracked ones to prove it's not all hype.

That being said I have an iron case A833 OD in my 57 Plymouth that has held up well and I'm not afraid to hammer on.

Just my twocents but if it's aluminum it will probably be on borrowed time, an iron case one should be fine.

chevy circle track guys look for 833 that are behind those early 5.7 diesels---they have a cult following because they are stronger than the old muncie---yes the iron case is stronger and is only surpassed by the hemi box....you are good to go....

Thanks every one! I do believe mine is the aluminum case unit but I am going to run it. I may pick up a spare just in case. When I pull the motor- may pull the motor and tranny out together not sure yet. What all do I have to disconnect as far as the clutch is concerned? Linkage, z bar etc..? Never have done a 4-speed before. Thanks

Also can I leave the shifter and shifter linkage hooked up? Just remove the shifter handle? Thanks

Don't beat on the aluminum case one - look for a steel case one to beat on. The aluminum case isn't bushed for the countershaft and eventually wallows out the hole in the case for the countershaft and the trans pukes its guts.
