Putting a 6.1 Hemi in my pickup

Putting a 6.1 Hemi in my pickup - 02/09/16 05:53 PM

I've decided that my old 360 just isn't doing it for me. We found a wrecked 2008 SRT8 Charger. Pulled all that it would take to make it work in my '76 Dodge Adventure sport truck. Got a five speed trans out of a pickup. It's still a work in progress. Kind of at a stalling point right now due to the shop having a few problems with personal. But will be back on track soon. Going to fab up a gas tank for it (nothing factory will work). From what I hear, nothing like this has been done to a pickup (yet). Should be a bunch of fun when done.
For reasons beyond my comprehension, I can't get the pics to load. Send emails, I'll send pics. Perhaps someone can figure it out for me.
What you all think?!

great project. the look of the new Hemis don't have much eye appeal for me though. I wanna see the holes in the valve covers!

Great to see! But I'm pretty sure there was another guy on here that put a 6.1 in a 70's truck. Would the 6.1 exhaust manifolds work?

How are smog checks going to treat you? Cool work! Maybe try Tanks Inc for a gas tank. Glad to see you back!

6.1 manifolds will work, but some major mods were needed. They first wanted to go with 5.7 manifolds. But that cut the power down to much. So we made the 6.1s work.

Good to see someone doing this swap. I've been considering it for a 70's truck or Ramcharger. As soon as I find a suitable candidate.

Keep us updated.

ps: I was hoping to find an aluminum fuel cell on ebay that will fit. They are cheap and come in all dimensions and capacities.

From what I hear, nothing like this has been done to a pickup (yet).,,,

So, I guess you don't look thru the WIW section here?

'77 Warlock from ebay posted here.

Regardless, not a common swap at all. Be sure to document the process!

Which 6.1's did they go with, the Jeep 6.1's (which are a little more streamlined) or the car 6.1 manifolds? Sounds like you've already got the manifolds chosen and committed to, but the latest generation of 6.4 SRT8 Jeeps use a really nice cast exhaust manifold. Any pics of the 6.1 manifolds installed and the mods needed (the 5.7 manifolds are in the pics)? It looks like it had a frame notch on the driver side. Really neat build. I love 70's trucks (had a 77 Warlock with a 440 20 yrs ago).

I did say "from what I hear". Sorry, didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. I've forgotten how easy it is to torque off people here. Just thought you'd all like to know what I've been up to on my truck.
I am using a 6.1 Hemi out of a '08 Charger, and all that goes with it (other than the trans.). Had to make a drive shaft. Anything that was cut for clearance will be welded up better/stronger than it was.
Waiting to get going on it again once the specialist starts.

No feathers ruffled here. I didn't mean to be rude with my post, my day at work just kinda carried over into it. blush

I'm looking forward to seeing the buildup of your truck!

You can use the trans if you put speed sensors on the rear wheels
I started putting a Hemi in my old RC but my move back home forced me to abandon the project I was using parts from trucks we parted & this Magnum R/T
It looked like it was easier to use truck mounts & pan to do the swap

That should be a tire smoker!
Darius went through the swap of a 5.7 and the NAG5 speed auto in his 70 GTX. The floorpan of the truck is much more forgiving though. Did I see a 518 in there instead?

Eric from CCM put an aluminum 6.4 in his 70 Cuda with a 518 automatic. Cool stuff, Mike.
