99 cummins quit!!! - 12/24/14 07:17 AM

Just driving home a couple of hours ago and it was like the key was cut off. I have a lift pump pressure gauge on the a-pillar and it would still make about 10 psi when you would crank the engine. I haven't had the chance to look into it further. What do you experts suggest looking at first?

I have never had my 2000 quit while driving, but I did have an issue with it not starting back when I would cut it off. Both times in that case it was the crank shaft sensor.
I believe you can cycle the key 3 times and get some code where the odometer is and maybe that will help out. Best of luck.

No codes what so ever.

Well I say no codes. The engine light never came on so I assume there is no code.

Checked all fuses, and verified that I have 11 psi at the lift pump. I then broke the fuel line at the head and there was no fuel.

Unfortunely having fuel volume to the VP44 is no guarantee that it will live.... it helps!, but it's no gold card. Unfortunately on your 99 you are going to need a pretty high end scan tool, or best is if you have access to a DRB chrysler scan tool to communicate with the ECM. Easy money is to always bet on the VP44 injection pump without seeing the situation hands on. good luck!

Is that "normal" for the injector pump to stop all at once like mine did?

It can do that.

Yes it is normal. The typical failure is a soldered connection on the pump control board fails due to vibration and heat. Boards are not available separately so a new pump is required. Also they are prone to main shaft breakage. both resulting instantaneous pump failure.

Same thing happened to me have a 99 CTD had a new lift pump on the truck 2 months old and good fuel pressure, driving along and it just stopped. No codes no check engine light just stopped like it was out of fuel but it wasn't.

Truck had 150K when that happened, changed out VP44 and its been great since. Got lucky on the VP44 friend that works for Mopar checked stock when Mopar was closing dealerships around 07/08??? He found one on the shelf for my truck and one for his so I did have one on the shelf.

Betting on the VP44............Good Luck.
