2001 Ram 1500 Brake Service Question - 12/07/14 12:55 AM

2001 Ram 1500 4x4. My truck is mint, you could eat off of it anywhere. These brakes have never been apart.

What Rhino is to transmissions, Grizzly is to the straight-axle Ram.

While having this straight-axle POS apart (AGAIN ) and replacing half of it, I noticed ONE of the front brake pads on the passenger side is getting close to done. It's the piston side pad.

The other pad is about 40% and the driver side is wearing even at about 40% too.

So, I put new pads on both sides, went for a drive and my passenger side is holding.

I cracked the bleeder and nothing came out. If I tap on the caliper brake fluid will come out.

So, what is it? Brake hose or caliper? I have to ask because my Partsman is going to quit getting me anything if I keep returning stuff that doesn't cure the problem.

Thanks.

Sounds like a sticky caliper. Clean and grease the slides and contacts.

Slides are new and caliper bolts are like factory fresh new. I just put a bit of lube on them and no change.

Started undoing the brake line and brake fluid drips out, caliper is still holding........

Just had an identical problem with my 99 Ram Van 2500. Problem was the rubber hose. Even tho it looks perfect outside, sometimes the insides go bad and create a pressure trap and the calipers will not release hydraulic pressure for a long period of time causing binding and quick wear of the pads.

Thanks Guys, it was the caliper but put a new hose on anyway due to past experience .

It's back together and bled. Is it normal for it to have zero drag even after working the pedal?

I would say no, it should have a little bit, all the ones I've ever messed with had a little.
