06 Dodge 2500 with head light problems - 10/27/14 05:42 AM

I have an 06 Dodge 2500 with head light issues that confusing the heack out of me, sometimes I turn on the head lights and nothing comes on but if I turn the headlight switch off and then back on the head lights will work, also when going from high beam to low or vice a versa sometimes the lights go off, but when I hit the switch a second time the lights will work , I have checked all my wires and battery terminal all looks good, I went back to the dealer and got a new turn signal/high beam switch leaver assembly but it did not change anything the lights still go off, I am going to get a new headlight on /off switch to see if that helps but I have my doubts that its going to fix the issue but don't know where else to look,,,,,,,,,,,Anyone have a thought on this problem?????

btw the truck is in really good shape and only has 34,000 miles on it, I think this headlight problem was present with the first owner also.....

Are the headlights for an 06 controlled by separate fuses and relays in the Power Distribution Module (the box under the hood between the battery & the firewall)? I think I would swap the relays & fuses with others in the box of the same amperage & see if the problem goes away. Gene

I have given your problem a lot of thought and I can relate to it with my 2002 CTD. I had the right side headlight go out a couple of times and the last time the bulb actually exploded inside the lens. I finally traced the problem to a loose ground wire on the right fender, the loose ground was causing arcing. The reason it was loose was because the diesel shakes the chassis on shut down and any connection can be loosened that way. My QC doors were rubbing at the top because the body was flexing on shutdown, I had to make certain the doors were closed before shutdown. Of course if your truck is a gas rig this may not apply, but I would still go over every connection in the lighting circuit, pull them apart, inspect the connections, pack them with dielectric compound and reseat them again just to eliminate those possibilities. Good luck.

There are no relays to remove or replace in an 06. They are a totally different animal than previous models. The lighting is controlled by the TIPM, or Totally Integrated Power Module under the hood. 06 was the first year for this module in pickups and replaces the FCM/IPM assembly. A scan tool will be helpful in accessing DTCs in the TIPM to figure out your problem. Other than that check for loose or corroded terminals in the connectors under the TIPM.

Thanks fellas , I Google TIPM and readed up on it , wow its 800 dollars and I not sure if that's the issue most Google hits are one headlight out not both on high or low but still I think the TIPM is the problem cause the rest of the electrics checks out ok and the truck really is in nice shape, I will have to buy a scan tool to go further on this, any suggestion on what scan tool to get?

Mopar is investigating TIPM issues, maybe a recall is in the works.

I had a friend with an '05 3500 with light problems when new. Turned out to be a bad instrument cluster. Something to do with canbus if I remember right.
