99 dakota questions - 10/18/14 04:19 PM

my occasionally used parts hauler just blew the trans. i just bought a 99 dakota 2wd extended cab with a 6 1/2" box to replace it.
has 123,000 miles with a 3.9 V6, auto trans, with a lot of power options.
the trans was rebuilt 10K miles ago. tie rods, ball joints, brakes all around and exhaust have been replaced in the last 5K miles.

it has a slightly rough idle that i think new plugs, wires, cap and rotor should fix. or is a slightly rough idle normal on these trucks?
also what kind of repairs will be looking at in the future?

THANKS for any info you can give me in advance.

Maybe pull the throttle body and clean out the Idle Air Motor. That cleaned up the idle on my 2002.

I bought mine this month, and the seller (a garage actually, the sale part of a charity they work with), and the seller installed all new tune-up parts "to get rid of a rough idle". My first tank of gas ran SeaFoam with it, and it runs fine!

These v6's were never smooth like a purpose-built V6 (like a GM 3.8).

I LOVE this truck! Best $2200.00 I ever spent!

Oh yes, he also told me that if I leave the truck for extended periods of time, it's hard to start, and it's true. It does take a lot of cranking to get it to go (after sitting like a week, starts normally if used daily). It was mentioned here that I should look at the idle air motor too, and I will one of these days. So far, I can live with it.
