Price of Replacement Tailgate - 2004 Ram 1500 - 10/11/14 12:06 AM

Just wondering if anyone knows what a replacement tailgate goes for? (New) I have a 2004 Ram 1500 & noticed that the lower, inside, edge where it's rolled over is starting to rust. By the end of this coming winter I am sure it'll look like crap & I'll want to address it. I poked around online but haven't seen one local & don't want to pay for shipping. I won't have a chance to stop at the Dodge dealer until late next week so if someone has gotten one recently I am wondering what they go for.

About a year ago I looked into getting a new tailgate for my 07 2500 at the dealer due to a small dent/scrape I put into it (stupid mistake). Haven't replaced it yet, just touched it up. Looks ok but my analness with any of my vehicles dictates a fresh one is in the future. The lip/seam under there is just beginning to exhibit some tiny paint bubbling but I'll take care of it for now. Just the tailgate. Rest of the truck is as spotless as the day I picked it up new.

Anyway, list was $805, my cost $575 out the door.

In the time it took yo make this post you could have called the dealer and gotten a quote over the phone.

M06 2500 has a 5th wheel tail gate. I am looking for a regular gate, and found one in a local jy. Was quoted at 300.00. Then I'd have to get it refinished. That's another 300.00. When did tailgates get so expensive??

300 bucks for a complete gate (latches,handles, etc.) is a steal......refinishing is what it is as the materials alone wouldn't be cheap. It is what it is these days...

Wonder how well that fits?

I think the issue is, there are a lot of us that have dealt with poor fitting, poor body line match up, and the poor rust resistance of many aftermarket parts, we are not willing to take a chance. I had a buddy the bought an aftermarket tailgate for his Bronco. It was such a pos that he couldn't even get it to hang on the hinges and latch on his unmolested Bronco. The tailgate he bought from Ford fit and worked, well worth the 4x price. Gene

Nope....but at that price, I'd stay very very very far away from it. Having sold parts for 40 + years, I have my own opinion of which tailgate I'd buy ....

I bought an offshore replacement unit for my old 99 out of Miami that fit well and seemed to be the same weight .... maybe I got lucky....but I sure do like to save money

Thanks for the replies, I have an idea of what to expect now since I never had to buy a tailgate in the 22 years I've had trucks.

That $140 tailgate offers free shipping & returns, but I can't help but think of that old saying, "You get what you pay for."

I don't know the name of it, but it's the darker gray. I can look at the file from the original papers when I bought it later tonight.

Around here there are always people selling southern and western truck parts. I would check craigslist and so on for an original in the same color. May not be a perfect match color wise, but much cheaper than a new one and getting it repainted... with no guarantee it would match anyways.

I bought a nice, straight, rust-free one for my 84 at the Nashville pick-a-part two weeks ago, they charge $39 for a tailgate no matter what year or model.

Called Graphite Metallic in 04. Mineral Gray a couple years later but could just be a name change - same color. I think any 3rd gen Ram tailgate would work so you may not be limited to an 04 tailgate. Just the badging changed back there.

Like others have mentioned, I'd try and find a rust free tailgate in the same color local (or within a moderate drive). Way cheaper and quite a few western and southern truck body parts are brought to the midwest/east coast for the rust belt guys.

I just bought a prepainted gate for my 03 3500 online/phone last month. It was $200, with $100 more to ship it. It was really well packed, paint looks pretty good, and fits alright. The gaps on the sides aren't as even as they were, but for the money I'm pretty happy. Took a few calls to get it ordered correctly, and they billed me wrong, but we got it worked out quickly (customer service was a little rough at the start). They'll do an OE tailgate for more $$$, but I'm taking my chances on the off brand one. Paintedtailgate.com, or the company name is actually mbi auto near Grand Rapids MI.

Thanks, I may consider that option.

I saw an ebay seller doing the same thing & thought it was a good idea. It's not a show truck, just a daily driver that I also tow with. Would be cool to find a seller close that I can just stop by & pick it up from.

There's lots of them from when people put on lift gates on the back of new trucks. I'd call all the auto recycling yards near you and the place that installs liftgates and ask them what they do with the original tailgate from like city vehicles.

I just had a liftgate installed on a new truck and now have the original gate just sitting around for when I need it. Sorry it's the wrong brand for your truck.

Oh yea the salesman that sold me the new truck, warned me to keep the tailgate locked because he says there have been many stolen for scrape metal. Might want to call the scrape metal dealer. Although, 2004 is pretty old.
