Found a not so "factory" cup holder for my truck....... - 09/15/14 05:52 PM

Took it out of a '78-9 Dodge crew cab truck. It bolted directly to the front of the seat using two strange looking "slip on for the cup holder" bolts. The bolts will screw directly into the center buddy seat storage box metal, then the cup holder assembly slips right on them. The unit (cup holder) never touches the carpet. Very sturdy unit. It was blue, so I prepped it, and shot it in semi-white/parchment color. Question: should I use it, or leave it alone? I can always take it out if I get tired of it some time. After which, you'd never know it was in there.
Here's two pics (I should get pics of the attaching bolts too I guess).

Ok, here's the bolts

hell id use it , I always wished they had cup holders for the 93-earlier trucks I been looking for some kind of cupholder for my 84 when it gets finished bout the only thing I can find is the unit LMC truck has that uses the seat belt to help hold it firmly to the bench seat with console storage.

Thats cool never seen one, does it say Chrysler on it? If I found 1 I'd use it. Looks great in there with those parchment seats.

Yeah, it's factory. I guess what the heck! I'll install it. If someone is using the buddy seat, all I have to do is pop it off the two mounting studs, and store it in the back of the seats. It's got a metal inner shell that the plastic is bradded to. It's even got a little cubby area in front for napkins, maps, or ?.

Sweet! Do you think that would work with a regular bench seat? I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for one in the future.

I guess I spoke to soon. After all the inquiries, I really took a good look at the inside of the unit. I had to get a flashlight and look way up inside to see any ID. Sorry folks, it's a Ford unit. But I did pull it from a Dodge truck! Sure looked like it belonged in there, and fooled me. Same color interior and everything! So! Now that we know who made it, the question still stands. Should I use it, or not? I guess I could make up some kind of home made cup holder to put in instead of this. At least it would be made not by ma Mopar, but a Mopar fanatic!

Looks good and if you like it, what else matters? Personally, I think it's great that it fits so well and I would use it in mine if I needed one.

Use it.

Can't count how many times the doggone cup has tipped over!

As long as there is not a Ford blue oval on it I would use it.

Nah, any Ford ID is tucked way up inside the unit. Unseen till you turn it over. Even then you really have to look for it.

Personally, I would make my own! But then again, I always make my own cup holders anyway, mostly because I haven't found anything that works very well. Several of the modern vehicles have decent cup holders, but few adapt well to older Mopars. I wouldn't be afraid of using a cup holder from any other manufacturer if it fits and works. Gene

Poking around in a u pull it one day I spotted a factory looking, in dash cup holder in a D150 ...

The PO had taken what appeared to be a 1st gen Dakota slide out cup holder, and cut an opening in the dash, IIRC near (maybe above?) the glove box, and installed it into the dash.

Looked OK, and appeared to work OK, but I think what made it work was that it was a non air truck, AC trucks have duct work in that area.

Kind of a long reach for the driver ...

classic consoles

Have their consoles in two cars now and I´m very happy with them.
The bench version in the D100 and the tunnel version in the 73 Dart (last pic)
Don´t wanna miss them any more. As a coffee junkie I love em.
Many colors available, solid stuff. Costs a few bucks, but I´m fully happy with what I´ve got..
