99 Dodge 1500 ram problem, Needing help - 04/09/14 02:53 AM

Have a friend who has a 99 ram with 360 magnum and Automatic trans, And is in need of some help. I have never heard of a problem like this with the rams. Hope one of you guys have?? He said he was driving down the road and hit a big bump or pothole and truck just died. Has no power at all inside. Turn key on and nothing works at all. Battery still good... Any ideas?????

Sounds like he has lost power to the power distribution center out under the hood. Get a test light and see if the large red wire going into the front of it has power. If someone has put on some aftermarket replacement battery cable ends this could be the problem. Possible bad connection there, i.e. corroded wire or loose in the terminal. They are also prone to break the wire(s) to the ignition switch and have a no power condition. This is mainly on trucks with tilt column. If you got power to the PDC, pull the plastic shrouds behind the steering wheel and look at the ignition switch wires at the connector to the switch under the column.

Dirty battery terminals/ bad cable ends.
I'm having the same issue with my 94. Last year truck died on me, I popped the hood, wiggled one of the cables and it started. Cleaned everything real nice and planned on changing the cables (never did).
Truck was fine through the winter/ snow and ice. First 70 degree day this year, I made a trash run, hit a bump and it shut right down. Lights were dim, buzzer slack. Twisted a cable and it almost started. Cleaned terminals and got it started.
Theory I have is that higher temps mean more resistance(and more corrosion) and make for a poor ground.

You know that big black box under the hood, driver's side? Disconnect the battery cable. Then, open the lid to that box, disconnect the main positive cable, clean, reconnect and see what happens. Probably all it is. The problem is that the bolt that holds that cable is designed kinda like a modern gas cap. It only get so tight, then clicks.
