Lil Red stacks on my ramp truck

Lil Red stacks on my ramp truck - 01/31/14 06:13 PM

So I am mocking up the original set of Lil Red stacks and steps I have laying around and was looking for suggestions. The only place they seem to work are on the sides of the club cab which make them sit a bit low compared to where they mount on the bed of a Lil Red. Let me know what you think if it will look OK or do I need to raise them somehow?

What if you mounted them through the car deck in the corners, that way you could adjust them to whatever height you wanted.
The only thing I wonder if it will put soot on the cars you're hauling?

looks good to me. back when Dad was driving truck, the stacks didn;t stick up above the roof 6 feet lik they do now.

Bad idea IMO.

You will cover whatever your hauling with diesel soot, especially after it rains and the stacks are spitting out water and soot when you first fire it up.

I have big trucks that do that every time it rains.

Not a fan of stacks on PU's. Even the LRE my buddy had looked way better when they were deleted.

Think I would just put them on EBAY and pocket some pretty good money...

I think it would look ok if the get moved behind the cab somehow (like mentioned above going through the deck), but in the end, I think it just isn't going to work and look right.

They need to be horizontal instead of verticle..

Sidepipes

I don't haul many nice cars with this truck, I usually use the enclosed trailer when I do that so it is no big deal about the soot. Right now the exhaust is a straight pipe because the muffler fell off when I bought the truck and has covered the underside of the truck with tons of soot. I drove a Lil Red as a daily driver for 4 years and have parted out a few, that is where these stacks came from and they have been laying around for years so I might as well put them to use. This is the latest place I put them, I think that is where they will go and I will sell the steps. How about this set-up?

All I gotta do is cut holes in the bed, there is nothing that goes there anyway...

no. no. no..you should sell those to me for my daily driver stepside.

BUT,,,I am gonna be truthful and say I do like them in the deck with out the steps.. right up to where you said the 4 letter word on the steps.

I am fixing to scrap the duels down one side and the tank down the other side and will be re-doing the pipes from headers back.. now would be a good time to add the stacks my stepside.

Re: Lil Red stacks on my ramp truck - 02/01/14 03:13 AM

I have had lots of cars with sidepipes and I got tired of burning my legs in the summertime! The exhaust is good past the cab so the plan is to make new pipes from there to the stacks. I am in the process of adding reinforcements under the bed to the frame and new side skirting so I might change my mind and just put the pipe all the way past the axle, so the stacks may be available...

I am kinda digging the Big Black Ramp Express Truck though.

If your going to run them, ...behind the cab & through the bed like that looks better to me. I think I'd turn the tip angled out a little for slobber. I would think some would have to end up on what's being hauled though.

I don't think either of them look good at all, but the first version looks less bad. Just my $.02. If you like it, that's what matters.

Jim,
The soot will be a real problem,

After 15 yrs the stacks are rusty on my Warlock... why dont you donate them to your old truck?

I called dibs on them..

I will be honest and say they would look much better on a truck that came with them rather than my 85 which does not.. but 85 is the last yr for a stepside.

they would be less gooberish looking than the 2 sticks of pipe I was looking at to make a set of stacks with no shields though.

I vote for no stacks on tow vehicles. I don't even like rear exit on tag towing pick ups.

Side exit or behind rear wheels.

Re: Lil Red stacks on my ramp truck - 02/03/14 12:11 AM

Actually side exit is illegal in Illinois, and I had a heck of a time with my Lil Red in the late 80's trying to get it passed through emissions. I finally had to bring in factory brochures and they gave me an exemption. I am not sure about dumping behind the axle either, I will have to find out.

Turn the tips of the stacks 90 degrees so the blow out to the sides. It made a big difference on my LRT

Especially now that I remember you said you put those "prince of darkness" injectors in that truck. They're called that for a reason.

Re: Lil Red stacks on my ramp truck - 02/03/14 05:30 PM

I forgot about those new injectors, I have noticed a bit more smoke coming out the back...

Re: Lil Red stacks on my ramp truck - 02/04/14 04:07 AM

I say run the stacks, just turn them out about 45 degrees, or maybe more.

I had a stack on my truck for a long while, and when I towed soot wasn't an issue.

Plus in the mock up, I think they look really cool!
