Interesting factroy tach dash bezel

Interesting factroy tach dash bezel - 01/26/14 09:46 PM

Saw some pictures of what is reported as the dash bezel from a 400 to 700 series Dodge truck. Said to have been used throughout the 70's in the bigger trucks.

If this is the case, I will be scouting for these. I think its a nice looking piece.

I personally have never seen the inside of the heavy duty trucks, so I dont know.

My thought was if its not from the HD trucks, maybe another Mopar in dash application, and thats why the wiring looks to be plug and play.

Good luck. That set up is rarer than hen's teeth.

Is it indeed from the Medium Duty 400-700 series trucks?

It is from d or w series up to 800 series. I have owned, sold from new a lot of those trucks and I don't ever recall seeing a tachometer. C series had them commonly and they were all cable driven off the distributor. I am sure it could of been an option, but I never have seen them.

I'm surprised it goes to 6000.

What Jamie is wanting to know is is the Larger tach setup he posted Factory for the 400up. It was stated it was only in the 400up trucks. I assume we've All seen the Smaller one that nitrousin posted. I've had a few myself

Of course this isn't factory, but I couldn't afford the high dollar prices people wanted for their factory tachs. I went out and got an AutoMeter tach. The only reason I pick up this one is because the hole was already there for a trans cooler gage (broken, and not working) and this slid right in. Works great, not hard to read at a glance, and the needle is the same color as the rest. Just an option.

Exactly.

I have seen, and had, the factory small tach, but never seen the large diameter tach as a factory installation.

The tack had a pentastar stamped just under the U bracket, and the part number looks Mopar.

I just want to know if the Medium Duty trucks have been hiding a really cool factory truck dash.

Re: Interesting factroy tach dash bezel - 01/27/14 08:57 PM

why does the big tach read *100 where as the others are *1000 maybe the big one is a diesel.

Re: Interesting factroy tach dash bezel - 01/27/14 09:34 PM

Its still a 6000rpm tach.

The others use a single digit * 1000

this one uses a double digit * 100

the Medium Duty trucks would typically have had the 318 or maybe an industrial 413 platform.

If it was a diesel tach, it wouldn't use the same wiring as a gas (as seen on the back side)

What Diesel was used in the 400 and bigger trucks though? We think its from a car or something.

The bezel is 77 or newer.
Dodge quit making D series 500-800 trucks in 77 or 78.
It sure looks factory from the hole to the wires and the tachometer itself.
Maybe exported truck?

Wouldn't that bezel fit the 75 through 80 dodge trucks?

What makes it a 77 or newer?

Silver color. 76 on back was black. 77 on up was silver.

I didn't know this. I have seen both colors, as well as the various woodgrains, but thought they were all just options.

Also it would have to be 75-80 for that style.
Not sure on the wood grains.
77 on up silver.

Where did you get that picture?

75 to 80 is what I had said it should fit.

The picture came off a post on Facebook in one of the dodge truck pages. Guy is thinking about listing it on the ebay.

I just wanted to know if it was authentic, and if so I would play more attention to the bigger Dodges from now on.

That sure perked my interest. Like I said I have sold from new and owned many larger d series truck and have never seen that tach. It sure looks to be original. I will keep my eye peeled looking for another one.

Re: Interesting factroy tach dash bezel - 01/28/14 06:40 AM

The color of the dash bezel depended on the trim level. Here's a shot from the 76 brochure that clearly shows a silver bezel on the right. I have yet to nail down the changes among them in relation to model year. About the one originally posted, it sure looks factory. Interesting, too!

I have one of those tachs laying around in a box somewhere. NOS, bought it thinking it was correct for my '78 before I got the correct tach/vac/volt setup.

Re: Interesting factroy tach dash bezel - 03/19/14 02:56 AM

The guy did list it on eBay and I bought it. It's sweet. It'll go perfect in my crew cab cummins I'm building. It does have the pentastar logo on the back and both the tach and bezel have indexing marks on them so the tach is orientated correctly.

Re: Interesting factroy tach dash bezel - 03/19/14 03:04 AM

Many years ago somebody on here ran the part # for me and it seems it came back with a rather generic description for the application. Here's mine, I took the clamp off to get a better shot of the markings on the back.
