2013 and 2014 HD trucks - 01/03/14 07:14 AM

This is a two fold question. First, what is the difference between a 2500 and a 3500 (single wheel) gas burner 4x4? I have seen some stuff that says there is virtually no difference except the springs. I was wondering if they both have the same front axles, but other than that what are other differences?

Second, do the trucks still have the ball joint issues I have read about? Do you gas burners seem to have less trouble with the joints due to the reduced weight? I have read there is really no fix for the joints. Is this true?

In 2013, the main difference was the front suspension. The 2500 had 4 link, 3500 used radius arms. For 2014, both 2500 and 3500 have radius arm front suspension, but the 2500 gets 5 link and coils in the rear while the 3500 retains the leaf springs. IMO, the radius arm front suspension is a much better design than the 4/5 link.

For the gas trucks up through 2013, the 10.5" AAM rear axle is used (11.5" for diesel). In 2014, all HD trucks use 11.5", gas or diesel.

Ball joints are an issue, and I've seen gas trucks with prematurely worn ball joints as well. Seems like 60-80,000 is the range that most truck need ball joints, depending on useage. You can replace with Moog for a slight upgrade, or go to the extreme duty pieces from Carli suspension. They're supposed to be very good, but they also cost $800 for the set.

The 2500 tradesman comes standard with a smaller tire ( LT245/70R17E ).

When you order up a trim level or two the truck gets an upgrade to a 265 tire, or larger if 18 inch wheels are specified.

The 245 sized tire is not available on the 3500 series regardless of trim level.

My personal opinion is that the smaller 245 tire just does not look right on that truck.
Try to order yours with the 265 tire size on the 17 inch rims, or whatever 18 inch rims
are available.

I agree, even 265's look too small.
