It's got a 46 RH, plenty of rebuild kits and some worthy upgrades to the OD unit

You can use the diesel guts to beef up the capacity of your trans. Add an extra clutch to the front drum to a total of 4 is an easy upgrade. Adding extra OD brake and direct clutches in the OD will also help. A good shift kit with valve body mods to increase line pressure and pressure to the TC lock up clutch is also a good idea. Use a GOOD plate style aftermarket cooler when re-installed to keep the heat in check. The factory cooler set-up through the radiator is not the best to say the least.

The factory had external coolers that install in between the rad and A/C condensor--They bolt right onto the V-brace. Couldn't get any easier. I just got a couple from a junkyard (make sure they have clean fluid in them and then still flush them out with cleaner) and installed one in my '95 as I have been starting to tow my trailer some more.

Will a 1995 2wd OD unit from a 47RH
bolt onto a
1995 2wd 46RH transmission in place of its original OD unit?

Or must you start with a OD unit from a 46RH and then beef up its internals?

It will bolt on to the 46. You will want to swap out the diesel governor for the gas unit.
