79 Power Wagon Stalls when put into Gear - 12/05/13 06:08 PM

79 Power Wagon stalls when I put it into drive. Its a automatic and believe a 360 motor. Bought it for $150 bucks and I use it for in the woods for moving logs. It was running okay 2 years ago somewhat. It starts and idles great. No misses or anything. When you put it in gear it stalls or you really have to feather the throttle and maybe you get it under its own power sometimes then it runs okay. Just alot of stumbling and stalling to get it initially going. I just rebuilt the carb but could not get the what I think is the power valve out/plunger thing in center of carb. That didn't fix it. Then I put on new wires/plugs and that didn't fix it. After I ran it around for a little and checked the tranny fluid I noticed it was low, not on the dipstick. I didn't have any fluid at time to put in so I have to get some. Could this cause it or do you think its something with the fuel air/mixture screws at the bottom base of carb. There are 2 adjustment screws.
Also, I can't move the 4 wheel drive shifter at all. Seems as if it is frozen. You should be able to just move it anytime right? Nothing special you have to do to put it in 4 wheel drive or out like step on brake or be moving or anything right?

Shoot some carb cleaner down the air bleeds.
I turn in screws till it stumbles and back out 1.5.

Vacuum leak is also possible.

Make sure the carb is tight to the intake, and check vacuum lines.

Gas is fresh and everything is tight and no vacuum leaks. Possibly the accelerator pump someone else mentioned which I did not replace during the carb rebuild due to I could not get it out of the carb no matter how much I tried. Will have to see if it is shooting gas when I move the linkage and look down into it.

Big red flag. Was it squirting fuel before rebuild? And what carb do you have?

I don't know if it was squirting fuel before the rebuild. I have a 2 barrel model 2210 or 2245 have to look at box to make sure. What kind of tool do you use to get accelerator pump out of carb? I could not budge it out with a screwdriver I believe and it started to strip.

On every carb I've worked on, once you've removed all the linkages and top of the carb, the shaft and plunger pulls right out. Dunno how it could move while running then not pull out when torn down.

Well, I found out what was causing the problem this past weekend. All it was the little metal part I had on backwards that connects to a 3 1/2 long metal connector that hooks to the throttle. The metal piece that I had on backwards pushes down on a plunger that is on top of the carb.

It was not the accerator pump as that squirts fine. So, didn't have to take the carb back off. Got lucky. Thanks to all who shot some ideas out.
