what shifter to use - 10/05/13 08:06 PM

I want to replace the old Hurst shifter in my 80 D150. I would like to replace it with a Hurst Competition Plus. Question is which one do I use, they don't specifically say which one for the trucks Do any of you know?

The truck ones just sit higher is all. You could make a stand for it to sit higher. The one that was in my 83 was for a car. I think it was Hurst

Obese?

Which one would work better, the A, B, or E body shifter or does it matter?

The Hurst boxes are all fairly similar and would fit the stock bracket on the truck, as well as A, B, E bodies and such. There are minor diferences in the levers where the shift rods attach on some models, but there is usually plenty of adjustment in the shift rods to get it hooked up.

Now, here is where your going to get into a little trouble. The stock shifter stick is a slide in deal. Now, you can make your stick a bolt on style for the comp plus shifter by drilling the holes out (what I did to the stock shifter and stick to take the slop out of the cushined retainer). If I remeber right, the dimples are in the stick so you know where to drill it, so it is really easy IMO to do.

The factory shifters dont use bushings where the linkage hooks up where the aftermarket shifters do. I have a new Comp Plus Id like to somehow install in my shorty but since the truck is on the market it will probally never happen....

But I believe the stock rods still fit those bushings well. If they are the same bushings sold by say Mr Gasket, In my '73 Dartsport I drilled my Hurst shifter and put the busings in and the rods fit fine in there. I also added washers to the back side so when you went to put the retainer clip in, basically all of the slop was taken out. You will be amazed at how much better it shifts that way. The next incarnation had a Vertigate and I made my own rods with heim joints on them. That was by far the easiest and smoothest shifting trans setup I ever had. It doesn't matter what the car or shifter is, make it tight, and smooth, it will shift well.

I just might buy it Larry, if your serious. And if the price is right.
