86 Ram 318 Oil Capacity - 09/04/13 01:38 AM
I just noticed when I did an oil change on my 318 in my 86 Ram that 5 quarts of oil show about 1/4" below full mark on the dipstick.
The dipstick looks original and the truck is an unmolested old truck...
I always thought small blocks were 5 quarts with filter...
Could this need more than 5 quarts to fill it?

They are 6 and the big blocks were too
IMHO, it varys a little depending on how big the filter is.
i would use 5 and top it off to the full mark, I have found over the yrs not all truck pans are 6 qrts some are 5 and use a large qrt filter.if it gets a small filter it is over little over full.
I never trust any of the sticks on used trucks. I change oil + fliter with 5 and either remark or top off..which ever looks right.
6 qrts on my BB 440 rear sump pan puts oil on top of windage tray. so it gets a napa gold 15155 filter and 5 qrts. (I mocked and measured it up before install so I know this)
ok,maybe i am just cheap and run 5 qurts and not 6

Owners manual on my 79 van say 6 1/2 for the 360. I run a Pure PL30001 filter. Run that filter on the wife's '06 Caravan 3.3 too!
