Evaporative leak on 2000 Ram.Any Dodge techs out there? - 08/29/13 07:05 PM

Last month my engine light came on my 2000 Dodge Ram 5.9. Brought it to my local mechanic and he said it was a vapor leak from a hose to the vapor canister and a leak detection pump code P0455 so he fixed the hose and changed the pump. 4 days later the light came back on so I decided to bring it to the dealership since my mechanic had a death in the family. The dealership said it was the vapor canister and Duty Purge Pump per TSB code P0455 so they replaced all the lines and vapor canister and also reflashed the PCM and resmoked the entire system. No leaks. The next day he tested everything again it passed with no codes. Just to make sure he retested it and the test never completed this time. They contacted STAR and updated PCM and retested and test never finished. Contacted STAR again and they said it could be possible software issue. So the leak detection pump, Duty Purge Pump, hose and vapor canister all have been replaced. 3 days later (this morning) engine light on again. I am getting frustrated with this thing. Does it sound like my PCM is going bad? Any Dodge techs out there?

I think a bad gas cap can cause a evap code.

New gas cap fixed that on my '98 Ram. Smearing the rubber seal on the cap with Vaseline fixed it for a while but not long.

New gas cap was replaced with Vaseline. Pcv valve also replaced. Leak detection pump was replaced twice. All parts replaced with factory Mopar parts.

Well the dealership is telling me that it is my engine harness which has been discontinued. Anybody know where I can get one?

Sounds to me like the dealership is throwing parts at a problem they are guessing at. What is so wrong with the harness that they can't repair the wiring?

Re: Evaporative leak on 2000 Ram.Any Dodge techs out there? - 08/30/13 02:49 AM

They sad they can wiggle the harness and the engine light will go on and off. I am going there tomorrow to see it. So far 2 different mechanics said that is a possibility since I have replacied everything that pertains to the evaporative system.

I think I'd trace the harness while wriggling it in short sections until I located the problem.

To me it sounds like they don't want to spend the time and do that.

Does this dealership have an know how to use a smoke machine? It really is the best/only way to identify Evap leaks. As for having a bad harness, well this is an electrical system and we always explain that to our customers. It can always be a mechanical or electrical issue. Not sure it would need an entire new harness, other than it will save labor hours to replace it all rather than isolate the issue and repair it. My suggestion is find a better place to take your truck to for repairs. Dealerships want easy profitable repairs, not necessarily the time consuming diagnostic and electrical repair stuff. BTW the wiggle test is pretty common diagnostic approach these days. You would be surprised how often it works.

Oh yeah FWIW the last one we had actually had a crack in a rubber grommet that was the issue. The evap line had a rubber connection from the one of the plastic lines that had dried out and cracked. We found it with a smoke machine. After it had been to a shop without one that just kept throwing parts at it. A lot of shop tend the throw parts at evap leaks because they don't want to invest in a smoke machine.

A smoke test was done numerous times. The first time they did that they found a leak from a line going to the vapor canister. Fixed that. Did more numerous smoke test and nothing. They ended up checking the harness. They wiggled the harness and load tested ckt k52 and f12. They did some other tests and found high resistance (open circuit) when wiggled at circuit k52.

wiggling the wires and getting a failure means you have a bad connection or a broken wire. corrosion/fretting/failed crimp, etc...shouldn't be too hard to find. I don't have an FSM handy...what do these circuits control?

Re: Evaporative leak on 2000 Ram.Any Dodge techs out there? - 08/31/13 04:50 PM

Corossion and broken wires are common especially here.I dont know how many GM headlights Ive fixed because of crappy soldered connections in the front.I guess they figure it was good enough to get out of warranty so why worry about it.Last front harness I did on a Sunfire cost was almost 600 bucks.Plus mark up and labor.Rocky

Code P0443. Still battling the problem. I got a tune up 3-4 weeks before this whole fiasco. Can a tune up cause this?

Had this problem with a truck I owned, the plastic around the fuel pump was cracked. Being on top of the fuel tank you couldn't see any smoke until you dropped the tank.

This is a common problem with mopars of that era i had a 03 chrysler t/c and my son had a 02 durango that would come up with evap codes all the time . i got the van thru emissions barely by my sons friend worked at a place that did emissions and got it to pass . but from what i heard the plastic hoses and nipples crack on the fuel pump module .

Total and complete bullsh!t story. Typical dealership. A check engine light will only go off when the proper erase procedure is done.

Find another fuel station: 9 times out of ten switching fuel will give a check engine light. You are getting stale fuel from somewhere.

By the way, emissions may be covered for lifetime on this truck. Check with 1-800 Dodge to confirm. None of this should be costing you a cent.

P0443 is a CIRCUIT prob... not an evap system prob..... but keep trying those different gas stations!

I'm dropping off my truck to my mechanic (not dealership) on Monday. He is also stumped. The dealership sounds like they are done with me. They said it is in the wiring harness and too time consuming.

No doubt it will take some time to find the problem. The code you have now is not the same as you started with. So it sounds to me like the original problem is fixed and now you have another problem. The fix only take 5 minutes to correct. The problem is most people don't want to pay for the time to get to the root cause. Its obvious they have isolated the bad circuit. You have to commit to the time it may take to get to the gremlin.

In our shops its straight time on these problems. And when the customer tells me about all the hands that have already tried to fix it I inform them it may even take more time. Most often these problems have several causes. The original root cause and all the others from people working on it that have no business or smarts to comprehend the correct repair procedure.

I know what you mean. I have saved all my reciepts and have told my mechanic everything that was done. I don't know if it has anything to do with it but my truck feels a tad rough at idle. The tach does nut fluctuate at all. I'm throwing this out in left field but bad PCM?

This is what the dealership said now. This is after they replaced leak detection pump, duty purge solenoid, all hoses from the vapor canister to leak dection pump, gas cap, and both vapor canisters. I don't know if they are blowing smoke up my azz now just to get rid of me.

No, no, keep throwing money at the problem.

Why bother trying the simple stuff first?

Similar answer that I gave has been posted by Members over at Dodgeforum.com. Code goes away after driving for awhile. One guy over-filled his tank and got the same code-it went away after awhile. Look it up.

What's the shop bill on this thing so far?

Code has not gonna away in the last 5 days. I did get gas but not filled it up. The dealership bill is $1400 which I am going to call up Dodge Customer Service to see if they can help me out since it pertains to the Emission. I just don't want any reprocussion or animosity with the dealership since I also have a Durango that I bring there for service. I am going to bring it to my mechanic tomorrow morning and leave it with him for the next couple of weeks.

Gawd, I feel ill just seeing that number.

Thanks, I really appreciate you taking my suggestion. When I had some small leak codes on my '01 Ram the dealership smoke tested the whole system and didn't charge me anything. They came right out and said that emissions were covered after the normal warranty ran out.

And, here's what you should try, but this is just me and only my opinion:

Find another fuel station that has alot of turnover and go get yourself a full tank of 89. Go home, if you have a code reader erase your code. If not, borrow one. Unhook your battery cables overnight, plan a nice long highway trip, hook 'em back up and go. Fill your tank again from the same pump, and keep drivin'. If the code comes back just erase it and keep driving. Don't unhook the battery again, just keep putting the miles on and run the same fuel.

It can take a few tanks of fuel to do this while the computer re-learns what's happening. If all goes well that code will go away and leave you alone. Go back to 87 octane and everything should be fine.

I've been around the block with my 2001 Ram on small and large leak codes, and it always goes away. You just have to give it time and the computers don't leave any room for error if you get sh!t fuel, which in this day and age happens alot.

PM me if you like, I'd like to know how you make out. Hope this helps you.

They found high resistance (open circuit) when wiggled at circuit k52?

Why change the harness? No need to spend that kind of cash. If the problem is the wiring and not because of a loose or backed out pin in a connector why in the world wouldn't they just over lay a wire. That's what I was taught in the basic electrical classes years ago by Chrysler.

I think they just don't want tp spend the time anymore. I have been there 3 times in the last 3 weeks. I think they are getting tired of me and are trying to shoo me away.

Update:
My mechanic put in a remanufactured PCM with the latest software. I picked up the truck last week and the engine light has NOT come on. It looks like it was the PCM.

I could see that happening with say, a mis-fire code, but how in the world does quality or octane of gas have anything to do with a system that puts vacuum on a fuel tank?

Cost to fix my truck from showing three EVAP codes (large and small) a few years ago:

Zero dollars.

Just trying to help someone who asked for it and you guys just keep arguing with me. For what, I have no idea..............

Chill out. asking how something worked is not arguing. Arguing would be if I said "you're full of crap, there's no way in the world that worked and you're not helping the original poster out at all with your fable"

I just don't understand how good gas/bad gas had anything to do with evap codes, so I asked.

I'm confused as to what difference gas would make also. I have never heard of gas giving a CEL unless you the bottom of the tank and it has a bunch of water in it and I don't think that would give a evapcode.
