cab mount repair - 08/19/13 11:02 PM

I am replacing the cab on my 83 w350 plow truck with a cab from my 87 w150 parts truck. The cab mounts themselves are not in bad shape but the sheet metal channels between the mounts and the rockers have some thin spots wich I would like to cut out and replace while the cab is off also need a small patch on the floor on the driver side what gauge steel should I use to make patches would 16 or 18 be ok?

That should be ok. Anything's better than nothing. Biggest problem is if you want to weld dissimilar metals.

Thanks just wanted to make sure that would be strong enough I have some 16 gauge so I will go with that. I was thinking about going with the mounts from autobody specialties but mine are not that bad so I can save myself the $52 each and fix what I got. It is just a work truck for plowing and hauling firewood so I am not worried about making it look pretty I just need it to be solid
Thanks, Brian

i choped a little off my 85 cab to patch the 91 cab, IIRC the cold rolled sheet metal i used was 18-20 gauge.

when said and done, I will chop out the rest of the 85 cab for future patch work like rockers, cab corners...ect.

Thanks for the reply scratchnfotraction I dont have any useable metal left on the 83 cab it is nothing but rot from the bottom of the doors down even the trans tunnel is completely shot. The roof was the only part not rusted but it was a tree company truck and was hit pretty hard with a limb and creased the roof. I do have an 85 Ramcharger body I will have to see if there is anything I can use under there.

post a pic of the bad spots.

i will be removing the 85 cab in the next week or so. and once it is striped down I can chop you the boxed frame/cab mounts out if you want them before it goes to the scraper.

those pieces are in great shape on the 85 cab, the tunnel is still good but the flat floor pans are shot.
