Jeep CJ to 360 throttle cable. - 08/01/13 05:58 PM

I actually am working on a Scout 2 that I swapped a 360 into, but I think the Jeep guys probably have the same issue that I have. My throttle cable isn't right. If I put it through the firewall in the stock location, it would be too tight of a turn to be rear pull. Since that spot is essentially 90 degrees to the back plug, front to back. I really don't want a long unsightly front pull with a big 180 degree turn in it either. It's temporarily going through a small hole in the firewall in the area where it's indented to clear the motor. I can't seem to get a good picture to do it justice, but I"ll post one if you like. Thanks again for your help!

When I put the 360 in my 50 Dodge, I fabbed up a bell crank deal. It had a 2 piece round stock bent to resemble a channel like part, the throttle cable attached to the channel "ear" on one side and a solid linkage attached to the other "ear" and went to the carb. Both ears pointed up on mine, but both pointing down would work just as well, the ears just have to face the same direction. This part has to be made in such a way you can separate one ear from the base so it will slide in the bushings on the 2nd piece. The distance between the ears can be as wide as needed to make the pulls straight. That part set in a pair of bushings that was mounted to a piece of flat stock that bolted to the firewall. Keep the bushings as close to the ears as possible. The truck is no longer here, and I don't have any pictures, hopefully I've described it well enough. Gene

Well Gene, I'll be honest, I am having trouble picturing what you built. But please don't take any offense, as I'm often slow on the uptake. LOL! But it did spawn a thought of how I might be able to do it. It would be a little more complex in the end though, and it involved some bellcranks behind the firewall. The complexity of it though is making me reconsider it all. I'm not an engineer and I don't want to try to reinvent the wheel here either. Lol!

Before posting here, I had all but resigned myself to the idea of going to a front pull set-up, aka: Dodge Van, as Bob suggested. I just know that I'm not going to like the look of the big loop of cable under the hood. So I thought I'd ask,.. just in case. But as the old BMW ad used to say, "Form follows function". So I may be going to the van front pull system.

The only other option could be the drive by wire system. I will be installing GM TBI on it once I get the harness ready. And I may be able to make that upgrade at the same time. I'll do some casual research about that shortly and decide. I don't like drive by wire, but it sure makes things easier to package!
