98 Ram SS/T - intake gasket oil leak - 07/04/13 10:36 PM

So I have the intake cleaned off and the Hughes kit bolted on. I still need to clean up the mating surfaces on the heads and put it back together. I am using Felpro gaskets not the made in China gaskets that cane from Hughes. Yes I know the Felpro ones are possibly made in China too.
Front intake bolt on passenger was already busted just sitting there, and front driver side bolt I busted off. The rest went ok. Soaking broken bolts with Kroil over night, a small channel lock, tapping with a hammer, I was able to pull the broken bolts out. Lucky!
Now the gasket surface on the intake towards the front of the intake appears to have some pitting / corrosion maybe due to a coolant leak at some point.
So here is my question (finally) : Should I apply some black RTV between the gasket and the intake towards the front around the coolant jacket? Will that hurt anything? That is the area that has some roughness / pitting.

For 30 years I have coated around the water ports on every intake gasket I have ever done with RTV. Don't know if it ever made any difference, but I've never had a coolant leak around the water ports on any intake I've ever done. Pretty easy, cheap insurance.

Now, I'm sure someone is going to tell me I have been destroying the universe because of this, but I don't care. Gene

I did a lot of intakes at the shop.GM was the worst for pitting.I only used quality gaskets and just cleaned up the pitting.I only had to replace 1 intake because of pits and they were super bad.Never any leaks and they were all street driven every day drivers.I always install dry.But what ever works.Rocky

Thanx guys. I decided to put a thin bead of RTV just around the water ports and of course the valleys where the side gaskets join the end gaskets. It's running perfect now. I love Mopars. You fix something and it's fixed the first time. Unlike my POS Mercedes 300SL.
