Advice on '84 Ramcharger

Advice on '84 Ramcharger - 06/16/13 12:44 AM

My stepson, who lives in Reno NV, just bought an 84 Ramcharger. I'm not a truck guy and I live in NC. The truck is an auto with the 360.

It is in good shape but any truck that old is likely to have issues. This is my stepson's 1st truck but he is mechanically inclined. His friend is recommending that he replace the ThermoQuad. He says that they can leak gas and don't work well in offroad situations. I know TQs are often misunderstood.

The carb needs rebuilding. Should he replace it, if so what should he replace it with? Are they worth rebuilding?

I'd rebuild it. That truck if stock has a BUNCH of emission controls that interface with the carb.

Not really alot of emissions in 84. mainly smog pump. At least that's all my 84 Had and we hooked the smog pump

So what did you do with the venturi vacuum port, evaporative emission hose(s) and EGR? There's a couple more but it's been too many years. I think there were 9 or 10 vacuum lines and maybe an electic solenoid hookup for the evaporative system? I can't remember now if the CTS hooked to the carb or not?

Holley used to offer a replacement, list 7855 if I remember.

Didn't have all that crap. Had same about of stuff on motor my 78 did other than smog pump. Don't recall a bunch of vacuum lines etc.

The Q Jet I used was off a Dodge truck.

84 should have been near the end of the Thermoquad production. I believe Dodge replaced them with Q-jets in 85.

Having owned many Thermoquads, rather then rebuild it, I would replace it. Personally, swapping in an efi system would be 1st choice, followed by an AFB or Edelbrok, which would be 2nd choice, but many have had good luck with Q-jets. Gene

Thanks for the help. Shane is just getting back on his feet. He is doing fine but he can't afford to do the wrong thing with the truck.

Rebuild it and if he doesn't like it upgrade.
