The perfect 4-speed

The perfect 4-speed - 05/30/13 05:09 PM

My 4-speed has something like a 1.7:1 Third gear. That's a big drop. I've been looking for a closer ratio transmission. It turns out there were several NP435 variants, the best-=looking one to me is the NP435GA, something like a 1.31:1 Third.

Has anyone seen one of these? They could be found behind those ugly GMC V6s of the '60s.

Actually I like the 445 with it's car like ratios and synchro in 1st.

I've never seen one. I've seen several NP435s. Unfortunately they've all been Ford wide ratio 435s.

My understanding is that the 445 was used in the later 70s trucks..

I swapped a NP445 in place of the NP435 in my 73 W200 and really like it. Its a way better driver on the street with the 445 and having 4 useable gears easily offsets losing the granny low. If I need a creeper gear I just put it in 4lo with the front hubs unlocked.

I ordered a new '76 W100 with the 445. But I don't remember it having a synchro first gear.

I really liked the trans, but hated the full time 4wd, and didn't keep the truck very long, and sold it to a friend, who wore the truck out.
