360 Exhaust manifolds

I am restoring a 78 LRE. It had headers on it when I purchased it. I want to return it to stock. My question is: Are all 360 exhaust manifolds the same or some better than others. Does anyone have the part or casting numbers for the good manifolds. Will the exhaust manifolds from a car or a 360 magnum work.I know that it will run stronger with the headers, but I want to make stock again with the stock intake, carb and exhaust manifolds.

318/360 are the same and you need truck specific do to where they dump. Pretty sure all years are the same other than 74 back they are a bit different. Diff flow I doubt it.

I have a couple sets of 70's small block manifolds. A 79 360 set, and 72 318 set. Both are center dump.

I'll be in acampo? In about a week. I can throw them in the back if they'll work for you

My '71 318 center dumps are downright puny. Go with the '79s.

In answer to your question, no all 360 truck exhaust manifolds are not the same. Early manifolds did not have extra opening for the emission ports in the heads. If you use them on an emission head that still has the ports open, you will have 8 exhaust leaks. There are also manifolds out there with a flat extension under the exhaust port to cover the emission ports, the later emission manifolds have an extra section below the exhaust port for the emission port to dump into. Also, the right side manifold originally had a heat riser which the left side does not have. Too bad I don't have pictures to make all this visible. Gene

The emissions thing was in my head but never came out. I was messing with my 79 Powerwagon today and it had what looks like the early 70s manifold. They don't have all the ribs that run down the center port section on the manifold outside.

So, Let's get this right. The early 360 truck manifold have no emission ports, but the later ones do. I have "J" heads on my LRE. So I should look for early model manifolds. I hope I have it right.

Yes. not sure what yr they started the emissions holes but you'll know them when you see the off the motor

The 92-93 magnum manifolds are the next best thing to headers, and they fit the old body style trucks.

Let's get one thing straight:

You can bolt up a pair of late exhaust man9ifolds that have the AIR passage in them, to an early head OR a late head with the AIR ports in the head plugged, and it'll be all right. For example, my '86 318 had the AIR ports and exhaust manifolds with the AIR passage in them.

Some day I plan to run headers so I plugged the AIR ports in the late model heads. What about the exhaust manifolds? The AIR passage in the exhaust manifold is completely separate from the exhaust gas passages. So I can run them for the time being on the heads with the plugged AIR holes WITHOUT any leaks out the exhaust manifold. That's with the hole on the end of the manifold there the AIR pump should be hooked up, open.

Too many scare stories out there.

You have to plug the holes in the ends of the manifolds where the AIR tube bolts on.. Tap them and use a pipe plug..

This doesn't make sense to me, since the 93 4x4 RC with the Magnum manifolds from the factory clears everything.

The column linkage is not different between the 93 and earlier trucks to my knowledge.

I have heard about many guys using these manifolds, and none mentioned any shift linkage mods.

But thats not to say its not something to check out, only that I hadn't heard about it.

92-93 magnum manifolds are not a problem. the problems are the 94 up gen 2 manifolds, they do hit the column shifter linkage and down pipe will hit the z bar.. there are way more 94 up magnum manifolds around then 92-93... All gen 2 magnum manifolds dump toward the rear, not center of motor..

You do not have to plug the air holes in the end of the exhaust manifold unless you have not plugged the air holes in the head if you are using a later model.

If you are using an early model head without the air holes the late model exhaust manifolds with air holes will work just fine, no plugs needed.

The air passages and exhaust passages do not connect in the exhaust manifold.
