A/C cycle switch out of tolerance???

A/C cycle switch out of tolerance??? - 05/19/13 10:33 PM

The recently rechaged R-12 A/C system in my '85 Ram pumps down to the low 40's for the center vent temperature, low pressure side within factory tolerances.

Just as the cab is starting to get comfortable the compressor cycles off.

Is there a way to adjust this switch? Perhaps it is out of tolerance and needs to be replaced??

It seems to me that all the trucks of that era short-cycle the compressor. One "down and dirty" way to lengthen the cycle is to pull the switch capillary tube out of the suction tube a little at a time.

I had an '82 and '84, both were lousy from new for A/C. Pulling out the tube even a little led for freeze ups after as little as an hour. By '88 or so the A/C units were back to what I regard as normal operation. NEVER figured out how to get satisfactory A/C performance out of them, except to wait for winter.

I tried to do this today; the switch capillary tube is stuck tight in the suction tube, was concerned that I would break it. I tried holding it with a pair of pliers and tapping the pliers with a hammer...no movement.

Is this a fragile tube? How much pulling/tapping/pressure will it endure before it breaks?
