Gear reduction starter 'end head' bushing.

Gear reduction starter 'end head' bushing. - 05/04/13 05:33 AM

In the process of removing the battery cable from the starter the solenoid wire stud snapped off. Not a huge problem, I found the brush and solenoid assembly is available as one complete pre-assembled unit for $35 locally. Figured I would just give the whole unit a freshen up and replace all the bushings as well. Found two of the three easily enough but I cannot locate a source for the bushing in the 'end head' portion of the starter. Per the fsm its not serviced except through replacing the part which of course isnt really possible anymore.

Someone makes it, unless all the rebuilders are totally blowing smoke and getting lucky enough to not have to replace it frequently ?

I have a local starter/alt rebuilder that should have them.

they grind the endcap off the nose and press it into the nose housing is the way I have seen them done.

I would not waste a dime fixing the old starters. Get a new style lightweight starter and smile.

I would agree but this one was atleast 'free' until I snapped the stud off and decided to give it a homebrew 'restoration'. The only reason(s) I am putting a dime into this boat anchor is because its the larger frame/faster spinning version and I know it was in decent working condition before I damaged it. Sometimes OCD gets the best of you.
