4.7 H.O. oil issue

4.7 H.O. oil issue - 04/20/13 06:32 AM

I have an '06 Dakota AWD that I bought with 20K miles on it about 18 months ago. Since I bought it the thing has smoked on startup, not every time, and sometimes none. Sometimes it looks like the Marines are getting ready to come through. I have never seen it smoke when going down the road though. It uses about a quart in 800 miles.

Also, at times it tends to run rough at idle, but clears up. Has 59K on it now.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I would take a look at the fuel injectors and maybe some injector cleaner through it. It's my guess that one or two of your injectors are leaking fuel into and washing the cylinder walls down.

Mine would occasionally make a plume of smoke on startup after just driving it - and had an occasional rough idle. I figured out which injector to change on mine when it did the same thing by looking at the plugs.

Although - 1 quart of oil every 800 miles sounds like it could have another issue as well.

Sure sounds like valve seals. Back in the 90's the Mitsubishi 3.0 guides would drop in the head.

Mine does that once in a blue moon, but I have 187k on it. For the last several years I have been running rotella in it just recently I went with the 10/30 rottela and it seems to like it. I would try the rotella with maybe a quart of mm oil in the crankcase and a heavy dose in the fuel and take it for a blast. Btw mine uses no oil between the 5k oil changes so maybe the rings never seated or one is stuck???
