known issues with a 2001 5.9 1500 van - 04/14/13 10:09 PM

Looking for 2001 ram van 1500 information.
I got another vehicle to tow our 73 440 dart with. 16' dual axle equipment trailer, also hauls a 464 intl diesel utility tractor
Is a 2001 van all metric or is it still sae?
Is there any aluminum on the 5.9? IE do I need special coolant mixes.
Are the dash gauges actually gauges and not meter driven idiot lights like the 1998 ford Expedition I dumped.
I did not realize the van was a unibody until I had already purchased it, oh well....
Is this unibody a rust bucket if it comes from Indiana????
According to the book it will tow 8200# with a 127" WB 5.9 and a 9.25 3.55 rear end.
Sucker already has 150,000 miles... what will be the first thing to go bad?? The 4 od tranny an issue? Currently starts and runs fine with good power.
Last dodge truck I had was an 84 ramcharger 318 with a carb, never a non predictable problem.

Only aluminum that is on the engine is the intake manifold, the water pump & housing. It uses your standard green antifreeze.

My 01 ram has 149k and the 46re transmission has had not a single problem nor has the engine. Heck, it still has the original starter from when we bought it new in 2000.

My 02 has had 3 PCMs, so I've been told. It currently has strange issues pointing toward another one. There is a guy in the southeast that will rebuild them, he advertises on Ebay.
A 1500 with a 5.9L? Sure thought that was 2500-up.
Intake manifold lower plates leak, causing misfire.
360 magnum heads are known for cracks. Most are not life-threatening.
As said, the same aluminum components as other small blocks.
The trucks with that rear axle have had complaints of them dying. Haven't heard about the vans, but with it towing, I'd research that.
The gauges are all cluster module controlled, using communications from the PCM.

I always check the NHTSA Web site to research patterns of recalls and/or technical service bullitens for a vehicle I might purchase - this link should take you there:
