Although initially intended to be a parody of cartoons like Tom and Jerry, the shorts featuring Wile. E Coyote and the Road Runner became incredibly popular in their own right. I would have thought Ernest - as in earnest, really working at it...
Noble & bright in the case of Wile E Coyote seems like an inside joke, though, which adds a funny depth.

As for RR, 2 words: dust trails.

Loved WB cartoons as a kid, but RR was my favorite.
So I was certifiable when the car was announced...
