Universal fuel tank funnel?

Universal fuel tank funnel? - 07/01/23 05:32 PM

Of all things you’d think a simple, common fuel tank funnel would be an easy score (to fill from a standard five gallon containers)..

Everything I find is usually cheap, has a very slow flow rate, and / or is impossible to maneuver the tank and funnel simultaneously.

Every time I find a “possible”… I check the negative reviews and get swayed away.

I want to transfer multiple containers of small engine ethanol free into my cars, and replace with fresh in the containers.

Transferring to modern cars, not vintage.

Thoughts and experiences? shruggy

Are we talking late model capless fuel cap models? I sometimes use Chevron Techron additive with the long neck. When finished I cut the bottom off to make my own funnel. We had a neighbor run out of fuel in our driveway a couple years ago, he was driving a 2005 ~ 2010 300, that funnel worked great with our 5 gallon can. That same funnel works great when adding Seafoam to our capless fuel cap cars.

Thanks much!

I’m referring to tanks with standard “twist and click” caps.

Is the thickness of the long neck Techron pretty firm, or thin mil plastic?

I’ll have to check that out when I’m near a parts place. up

They're pretty danged stiff. They have to be to open that lower second flapper valve on these new cars. I use them in place of the cheapy inadequate funnels ma Mopar supplies with these capless fuel filler cars. They're hard to get to, small, easy to lose and expensive to replace if you do. After using Techron, the cost of a new funnel is zero.

Amazon linky ONLY $17.50

After having my first Charger and having that funnel come with the car I use it for multiple purposes. My TRX has it too but they hid it well. Came across it accidentally under back seat.

Re: Universal fuel tank funnel? - 07/02/23 07:15 PM

Me, I would forget the funnel as most require two hands to fill a vehicle screw cap fuel tank. I have a funnel that has a slight maybe 30 degree angle to the spout and if I can't get someone to hold it (as I pour gas on their hand) then I duct tape it to the vehicle. That eventually became a real pain. So I have a half dozen or more race fuel cans with a hose and plastic end and cap that fits a (lead free) filler hole. This is the fastest, quickest way to get gas into a vehicle, motorcycle, mower, generator, etc., bar none that I have used. You can fill it at the gas station or pour from another source into the race fuel can using as large as a straight funnel as you want then pour from that race fuel can into whatever you need to fill, Forget trying to find or use a funnel to fill the vehicle and get a setup like this. A little pricey but well worth it. You can find them for about $25 to $30 without the $11 spout or VP has one for $40 with the spout. Works even on a '68/'69 B-body with the behind the license plate screw cap filler DAMHIK grin

I guess the hose is strong enough to push the metal “flapper” open in lead free cars?

Agree with A12 Mike.
Yes, the PVC-ish plastic end works in my '90s cars & trucks, and it's really the only way to neatly get gas into my '68 & '69 Road Runners.

For adding Sta-Bil to a car when I don't pre-mix it, I use a funnel with a small-diameter end like what you'd use to fill an AT through its dipstick tube.

Yes as topside said it's more than strong enough to open the metal "flapper".

Another good thing about this is the hose is flexible enough to bend with the can down and first put the pipe into the gas filler hole (like a motorcycle tank, or lawn mower or generator or a '69 Charger wink etc.,) and then lift the can to pour.

Re: Universal fuel tank funnel? - 07/02/23 11:46 PM

And a note regarding the old adage that "you're never too old to learn something new", I've used gas cans for decades as I raced motorcycles (dirt bikes, road raced, worked for two motorcycle manufactures for over 40 of those years, etc.,) for decades (since the '60's) and have had the spouts leak and pour out gas when the screw on spout's gasket doesn't seal to the can (usually from age). A few years ago while at work and pouring gas into a bike with a similar VP can and the cap started to leak and leak badly. I put the can down and tightened the cap/spout as tight as possible and started again and it still leaked badly. A young guy standing there watching said "close the gas can vent" and so I did and the leak stopped. What happened was the gas can cap leak then became the vent and you could hear and see the cap leak now being the vent. Rule of thumb if the cap leaks then close the vent and make the leak the vent. Never too old to learn.

Did the fuel bottle and hose work for you? Remembered this thread as I was filling my JD 322 mower and pull behind finish mower today, curious me ? wink

Re: Universal fuel tank funnel? - 09/27/23 05:29 PM

I have always used one of the following. they're cheap and the first one works well with the new cap less fillers on newer Cars as it's long enough to push through both doors ( haven't tried the other). One can also slowly heat and put and angle in either type if needed beer

I have one of these Gulper funnels.

I've had that one and still use it for many, many years. But as explained you either have to tape or attach it to the vehicle or have help when pouring gas or diesel into it. My funnel like yours also has a "screen" or plastic web in it for the big chunks wink Still the best one-person method for pouring fuel into a vehicle is the race fuel "jugs" like the VP container and flexible hose with the plastic tube and cap on the end as shown, at least for me. BTW most funnels do not work well with dirt bikes or motorcycles with the frame backbone tank curve directly under the cap opening but the small plastic tube does.

I agree with your comments about the limitations of the Gulper funnel design, and have looped a string into that ring tab to steady it.

This thread has me thinking that I should empty the last few ounces from my current big long neck bottle of Startron Enzyme gasoline treatment and cut the bottom out to make another funnel.
