No AM on new car radios: dueling opinions - 05/08/23 11:32 AM

A bad idea being imposed:

NASBA says the automakers “are cutting corners on expensive new electric vehicles” by eliminating AM radios, which means more than 4,000 AM stations in the United States are at risk. But its survey results show that AM radio across the country provides a diverse mix of music and talk and is a vital link for millions of listeners.

Opposite opinion: they did it to themselves with their choice of programming and commercials

sample quote

The average person, which is about 95% of the population, couldn’t care less about audio fidelity. The days of “audiophiles” are gone. The downturn of AM listenership is almost exclusively due to poor programming, poor content.

Yes, FM in its early days was mostly easy listening, beautiful music and classical music. It catered to the audiophiles, and had a very limited audience even though it sounded great and in 1963 by offering multiplex stereo.

Once a few of the FM guys realized people were fed up with the 45 minute commercial breaks on AM stations with popular music, the format was adopted on FM, but with none or few commercials (because no one wanted to advertise on FM). Once people found out they could get the rock and pop music on FM without all the talk, the band switch started taking place.

The only time I listen to AM is if there's a college football game on that I want to listen to and the game is on on SiriusXM. I'll barely notice if they get rid of AM radio capability. violin

Since I could care less about downloading music on a device I guess I am the dinosaur who still listens to AM and FM while driving across this country. If I can't find anything on FM then AM it is. I don't plan on buying any vehicle newer than my 2015 Ram, and it has an AM/FM radio and a plug to charge my phone, I will never plug anything else in it... dino

Re: No AM on new car radios: dueling opinions - 05/08/23 02:43 PM

I was turned on to FM in the late '60s in SoCal, where a station would play the whole side of, say, Led Zep 1, or Miles Davis' "[censored]'s Brew", or whatever.
Very little talking/commercials, and cleaner reception than AM, which was largely Top 40, stick & ball sports, & Talk.
I've only listened to AM in the last few decades because someone else in the car or truck wanted to hear some talk radio.
One of my cars has a CD player, 3 have cassette players, and I never listen to anything other than the car in my Mopars & not often in the Mustang or Dually.
I have no idea how to work an Ipod, let alone everything since laugh2 and the concept of Infotainment in a car is odd to me.
So, I'm not the demographic for all this stuff, but I would think AM is valuable to a lot of folks.

I have read that the EVs generate so much EFI it is very difficult to get an AM radio to work static free in one of them.

I have no idea if that is true or not.

Don't worry someone like Crutchfield will come out with an AM converter for your OEM car radio just like the back in the day FM converters for your AM radio and 8-Track player. Someone will see this as a $$$$ making opt, you can count ($) on that. I'm drawing up plans in my head as I'm typing this now wink.

I still listen to AM radio almost every day. Often for many hours per day. But than, I'm not buying any EVs or new cars.

I listen to AM also. I find the news and weather much better than the garbage on TV. The rest of the content is much less repetitive than the garbage on FM where they play the same song 5 times a day. I am trying to reduce subscriptions so I'm not paying for Sirrius besides the couple times I used it(trial basis) I was way less than impressed.

In the Washington DC/ Frederick MD area 820 AM WWFD

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWFD

broadcasts solely in static resistant HD (hybrid digital)

old AM radios cannot pick this up, but ten year old or less OEM automotive radios can

It is all or nothing, either perfect signal or silent “drop out”

There is another one near Boston, that might still be all AM HD

https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/headlines/new-england-gets-its-first-all-digital-am

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WSRO

MIT run website “Radio Locator” is an informative station source,
can search out every station FM or AM receivable in an area,
and includes internet stream links

https://radio-locator.com/

In India
AM, FM and Shortwave stations are switching to DSM transmission tech
which is the United Nations sponsored free to use technology

Re: No AM on new car radios: dueling opinions - 05/09/23 11:48 AM

Don't listen to AM but hey, they want to cut the price, about 1/2 of the electronic crap should go. Electronic brakes, trans shifting, steering, All that BS safety crap for people that should apparently not have a license because they can't backup, change lanes, or maintain a safe drive distance. Boom, Just lopped off about 6k off the price of a vehicle. Oh, Take that "Infotainment screen" and toss it..

On a slightly different subject, has anyone noticed that nobody is really making music anymore.???? I know we get stuck in certain eras music-wise, but I was thinking about this the other day, and I don't think anything has really come out for about 10 years now. There was a time when Limp Bizcut, Saliva, etc just rocked new stuff for about 10 years. Starting around 2010, nothing. I listen to the radio now and it is literally noise. Bands I have never heard of(and I keep up with stuff) playing noise that yeah, it is someone singing, but really, just noise.

I used to listen to an oldies station a lot that was on AM. But then they changed to sports and everything on there is talk radio or other crap I wouldn't listen to so I don't even remember when the last time was that I purposely listened to AM radio anyway other then seeing if there was anything new on there out of boredom.

AM radio has already been deleted out of some new cars/trucks including EVs manufactured by BMW, Porsche, Audi, Volvo, Ford F-150 Lightning truck, Volkswagen SUV and Tesla Model S. Basic reason is not cost but rather the electronic inverter & PWM power supply circuits within an EV vehicle generate AM interference making AM radio reception impossible...

Just my $0.02.... wink

And that is just crappy engineering. It's not impossible, just more expensive.

Re: No AM on new car radios: dueling opinions - 05/12/23 11:01 AM

I rarely listen to FM anymore. I like to listen to oldies music from the 60's and early 70's and the only local station that is of an oldies format is an AM Iheart station out of Windsor. I have both my cars tuned to it as well as radios in the house and both garages. There used to be a good oldies FM station I listened to regularly but their format changed which is when I then found the AM station. My only complaint is the reception is unpredictable on the house/garage radios, most of the time it is good but sometimes it can be poor. On the car radios it doesn't seem to change.

replacing the factory speakers with pioneer's, and adding a radio shack amplifier helped a HUGE amount in sound quality.

Re: No AM on new car radios: dueling opinions - 05/22/23 10:29 AM

Another similar issue is that most cell phones modem chips have a built in FM radio.

Sometimes this function of the chip is turned on,
other phone makers have disabled it with software that can be changed,
other phone makers (Google Pixel phones) have strangely spent extra money disabling it with soldering in components.

Some of these chips, such as the ones designed by Silicon Labs company based in in Texas, are extremely capable radios

A similar issue is some cell phones can function in “local net mode” where they do not need a cell tower and can transmit and receive directly to nearby cell phones, to pass along text messages repeatedly until the message gets to the right user.

Ford decides to keep AM on its oem radios

https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/23/23734497/ford-am-radio-reverse-decision-ev-interference

but others are not

sample quote

A number of automakers have come out in favor of ditching AM radio from their cars, including BMW, Mazda, Polestar, Rivian, Tesla, Volkswagen, and Volvo. And the Zero Emission Transportation Association, which lobbies on behalf of EV makers, argued that the legislation mandating AM radio would “slow innovation and reduce consumer preference.”

Very EZ technical not expensive solution..
Change the EV inverters' digital switching frequency whenever AM is selected @ the head unit.
