Quite a tale, by an investigative journalist who kept digging to discover each step, including criminals working inside US Postal Service:

Interesting story. I see it started by getting their hands on the new CC, but how did they figure out the phone number and provider ?

I guess the “helpful” employee at the cell phone store where a replacement SIM card was being requested,
punched in the name and mailing address on the fake ID,
and asked: your lost phone cell number is xxx-xxx-xxxx ?
The crook answered “Yes”.

unless you paid to be unlisted, just google your name and address, it should pop your phone number.
then google your cell phone number and it will tell you who the provider is.

I read this one earlier today. I'm not a social media user but as near as I could tell they got the information from instagram?

A few days earlier, my colleague Rob Price had published a terrifying story about hackers who waged a campaign of harassment and intimidation to steal Instagram handles and other coveted usernames on social media. Tucked into that story was a phrase I hadn't heard before, a type of hack I'd had to look up: SIM swapping.

I was unable to get around the firewall for Rob Prices story.

It's crazy what scams they can do. I had & fraudulent charges on my company credit card last month that we disputed. The credit card company canceled my card and mailed me a new card. I didn't even receive my new card in the mail yet to activate it and they already had 2 charges against the new card before I even received it!!!!! Had to have the credit card company cancel that one also and send me a now 3rd card.
