What are your home propane costs per gallon?

What are your home propane costs per gallon? - 03/11/23 08:22 PM

Just had my 500 gallon tank topped off with 153 gallons.

$3.18 per gallon.

I was wondering what others are paying around the country.

I’m in O Fallon, Missouri…. About 40 miles west of St. Louis

I was actually a tad pleased with the cost, and amount needed.

Cold weather hasn’t been to bad, but we had a minus 10 multi night low awhile back.

Last fill for my car was .75/liter.
So in US, 1.95/gallon.

I was referring to liquified gas home propane.

But just for discussion, our car gas (non premium) around here is approx $2.90 per US gallon.

I just paid 2.90 a gallon for 143 gallons delivered, Central Washington State. It’s been pretty stable for the last year and a half.

Just paid $2.70 a gallon yesterday for 380 gallons. I switched from Amerigas (can't say enough bad about them!) last summer to a local supplier. My last fill up with Amerigas was $1.80 a gallon more!

I'm about 35 miles southwest of St.Louis just off I-44.
We've got two 500 gallon tanks, one for the garage and one for the house

We filled both of them in early January and it was $2.36 a gallon.

Around STL the propane company you use had a major effect on the price per gallon.
We use MFA propane (aka MFA Oil).

The one neighbor used Ferrell Gas and she always paid almost a dollar more per gallon for it.

Unless you own the tank you're locked in with the company that owns the tank, but most will supply the tank free if you switch to them.

I'm in SW Michigan and I just got filled at $1.74 a gallon. The company I'm with locks the price in for a year every June and already warned us it will probably be over $2.00 for next heating season.

I pre-paid and was locked in at 219.00 for the year. My buddy just called them and asked for a fill about 300 gallons paying cash and was quoted 2.09

same thing with oil... i got a delivery wed at 3.23 a gallon with a cod dealer... my neighbor who is under contract paid 5.13 the same day.... gotta shop it

$2.44 average Montana price today.

Re: What are your home propane costs per gallon? - 03/12/23 04:54 PM

I locked in at June 2022 for the year at $2.50 per gallon , 500 gallon tank
Highest it’s been in many many years based on saved receipts

Yes it’s been a warm winter in WI

Just north of Green Bay WI

Have no idea what the contract price will be for June 2023
I should call and ask I guess , at about 35% full on the tank

I have had propane in this sub division since the year 2000 when the home was built

We now have Natural Gas in our sub division as around five years ago or more WPS

I don’t know if it’s worth switching over or not based on monthly pricing average - First 100 feet is free install , line is on the opposite side of road
Then switching over forced air furnace and water heater to natural gas

Re: What are your home propane costs per gallon? - 03/12/23 08:24 PM

We have a pre-buy at $1.79 this year, it is different each year and we shop around. Need to be careful of additional fees, some charge a flat rate for deliveries, so charge per, and some are free. I'm worried about propane prices in the future if gas production is lower. I believe propane is a by product of turning oil into gas, but I could be wrong.

A lot of USA propane has been shipped to Europe,
Germany in particular,
to heat treat industrial metals there.

My brothers have professional knowledge of this.

Even with the USA diverted propane,
German factories output of high precision metal products is way down,
which is affecting the whole world.

I said $3.18

It was actually $2.97 per gallon, with approx $30 more in various fees.

All this nonsence will be over once Poutine has 2-3 more holes to breath or leak from.
His successor (probably a thristy Oligarque) will do the peace.
Then, Russia will flod the market with oil/Natural gas and LPG.
War cost money, and not a lot is coming in right now in Russia.

bawling Cry me a river. We paid $4.70 a gallon for home heating oil this past November and it's still over $4.00 a gallon now. Then add in a 160-year-old not so well insulated old farmhouse with a few rooms without central heat and I'll take $2.00 a gallon propane all day long. Just venting and letting off steam and some heat grin

1) Most prices in this thread are significantly more than $2.00 gallon.
2) Home heating oil has 138,000 btu, Propane has 91,000.

The difference is nowhere near what you imply.

Actually, the average of the 15 prices at this point that were posted is $2.04 per gallon. But I was just venting as I wait for the next 200-gallon delivery of home heating oil.

Various governments have messed up the whole earth’s fossil fuel market.

Has this happened before?

Here in the USA in the period 1914 to 1919
the price of “Nut & Slack” sized coal loaded in a railroad car went from
$0.5 per ton to $20 per ton

{at this time a troy ounce of Gold cost $20.67}

40X

In 1971 to 1975
the price of N&S sized coal loaded in a railroad car went from
$8 to $40 per ton

{at 1970 a troy ounce of Gold cost $36 until Richard Nixon “temporarily” suspended the Gold window of currency exchange}

In this recent episode, last year
coal loaded in a seagoing boat in Newcastle, Australia went up
from USA $60 per metric Tonne
to USA $270 per metric Tonne
Both China and Russia government “supreme leader” decisions contributed to this increase.

{ a Troy ounce of Gold varied $1700 to $1940 on markets}

China wanted to punish Australia for publicly demanding truth about the origin of an infectious disease.
China’s effort backfired.
Australia simply found other ready buyers for the coal.
China found out that other coal suppliers demanded more money for inferior coal.

Before the new contract pricing starts in July

They filled my 500 gallon tank to 80% , was at 10% , lowest I ever let it get in 25 years

$ 1.89 Gallon Summer

Much improved over last years contract of $ 2.59 Gallon

I am good well into winter

My buddy gets bent over hard since he has to pay about $5 per gallon. That is at least double the market rate but he is at the mercy of the local vendor who is the only game around.

I'm looking at a 2800 sf home about 70 miles from me - it was built in 2002. It's listed as forced air heat & LP. So here in MI, if I have a 500 gallon tank, how long will that last in the winter? We typically have to start heating in October. Coldest months are Jan. & Feb. I am used to heating with natural gas, so I have no idea how many gallons we use - different unit of measure. This winter, we had a couple heating bills of $380.00 per month.

Large cargos of propane are leaving the USA for Germany, where it is being used by industry, particularly for metal heat treating.

German industry used to use Russian natural gas.

Germany/Holland is floating into place LNG re-gasification ships at harbors, and building on shore re-gasification plants.

At the same time Holland has closed down a HUGE natural gas field within their borders that still can flow HUGE volumes,
because less than 100 families that farm the land above it complain about ground settlement.
This at the same time Holland government wants to prohibit other farmers from raising cattle, pigs, chickens because of NOx gas emissions from manure.

when the poop hit the fan and the russians invaded, most europeans stopped importing from russia- but most had some storage facilities .... germany had zero.... all they had was the pipelines... very poor planning on their part.. luckily there seems to be enough regas ships, so they should be ok - and they r importing gas from lots of places, not just the u.s.

Another interesting trend is a return to highly pure propane instead of freon in small AC units.

What we commonly call propane has considerable amounts of butane and is accurately called LPG.

I bet somewhere on Earth is an as yet undiscovered microbe that can efficiently turn ethanol into propane and water.
