The link probably works only if you have a facebook account.

I saw that video a few days ago and wondered how he's gonna explain it to his insurance company......... shake_head

He’s gonna lie, like they all do. He’s probably gonna get caught too. 😉

It's called "traction control" LOL

I'm going to have to guess it's an optional extra. I had to special order mine as they typically don't make them as base models. 5.0, 6 speed, cloth guts and nothing else.
It was funny but at the time, they could only find TWO in all of North America that were close enough matches to what I wanted. There was a blue 5.0 base in Tennessee but it was an Automatic; and then there was a blue base GT 6-speed in Manitoba, but it had Recaro's. Now.... you might get my fat ass *IN* to a Recaro.... but you'll probably have to cut me out.

Long story short, 7 years old, 40,000 miles later and not a single crash to report.

(I think it really comes down to numbskull drivers)

Serious question:
What is it about the Mustangs that make them suddenly turn like that under hard acceleration? It seems like ALL of the Mustang crash videos have a handling scenario like that. Since this was on a track, I am assuming he didnt hit an oil-down or water spot.

They just don't get out of it soon enough, it's usually the gear change that gets them.

If you watch closely you will see something come out the bottom and bounce back towards the starting line. What it is, I do not know.

The crashes are because kids grow up driving front wheel drive, they have no clue about RWD and these things are 450-800 hp. Its a predicted outcome. The first mistake they make is shutting off traction control, its game over at that point.

My son got his license two days ago. he has never driven a FWD vehicle.

Maybe there was some oil or water down that was not noticed from the previous run?? Anyway I'm pretty sure there's some oil or water down now. shock

I have an 18 GT convert. Zero issues with it. The car is an absolute hoot to drive...very predictable and easily controllable. That guy on the track should have got out of it...plain and simple. The Cars and Coffee vids we always see are idiots who fail to point the car straight before hitting the fun peddle.....it happens with Vettes and Challengers as well.

Re: Do all Mustangs come standard with Autocrash installed? - 03/11/23 05:30 AM

Agree. Leaving Cars and Coffee crashes are like this a lot - rear of the car tries to pass the front during the 1-2 shift.

Purely speculation, but I think it's that these relatively low speed wrecks seem to happen with the contemporary muscle cars is possibly because they are lower to the ground and still set up with stock type suspension. Maybe they don't really transfer all the weight to the rear tires like an old car with a higher ride height and generally looser suspension would?

Low profile tires with stiffer sidewalls that have less forgiveness between on/off, and the warning period when they are about to come unglued to the road is very short. The time from loose tires to car drifting sideways is simply too quick for most people to catch if they are not prepared for it.

Also seen a number of people tear up their cars like this at the track. They loose it a little bit and their race is essentially over, but they refuse to let out of it and end up rubbing the wall(s) while the guy in the other lane is long gone.

Also could mean nothing new under the sun and it used to be that old muscle cars used to crash like this bitd all the time. We just don't see it with old cars as much these days because the older cars are driven by older and wiser types who are not going to push their valued car to this extend anymore.

I think it boils down to wheel speed and traction.

Back in the day, you had an engine that made peak torque at 2,500 rpm and had (at best) a set of BFG's that would give up traction very easily. So, we could spin the tires off idle and maintain control easily since neither the tires, nor the vehicle were moving at any kind of significant speed.

In modern cars - most especially in the Mustang - peak torque is north of 4,000 rpm and the tires will hold traction much longer than an old BFG will. So to keep the hides boiling, you've got to have the engine screaming, probably in second gear and moving at a fair clip. Lose your train of thought for an instant and let those tires hook back up when you least suspect it, and you get tossed.

Same goes the other way.... keep the wheel speed up high enough to not let the tires grab, and pretty soon you're doing 50-60 mph with zero control of the rear end. You can't really modulate the power being sent to the back wheels when that kind of power or wheel speed is involved. Or, let's say, your average numbskull driver might not have the skills required to do so.

Turn all of the nannies off on these cars and they can be pretty unforgiving. I thought I was a badass once with all my nannies off and tried to showboat. Yeah, she bit back pretty hard. Luckily, all I did was swing the car right around in an intersection where previously in any of my old iron; I could drift through the intersection like I was Mario Andretti. Not so much in the new Mustang. "

I think it comes down to that sense of calmness modern cars can lull you into. Like soccer moms in their SUV's that think they can drive through 8 feet of snow on summer tires and are completely baffled when they flip the thing ass over teakettle. Same as in a Mustang.... it doesn't seem that powerful until you try doing some flash maneuver. Then you learn that 450 horsepower is WAY different than the 160 your old Camaro used to put out.

Re: Do all Mustangs come standard with Autocrash installed? - 03/11/23 09:51 AM

There comes a point where the car goes from severe understeer to extreme oversteer and that is usually right when the driver lifts. Sometimes it's better to keep your foot in it especially if the car is headed into the clear left lane and slowly straighten the front wheels. Lifting and turning right and then going into oversteer is what gets you into the guardrail or into the woods. Happens a lot on wet, ice or snow covered roads. The front turning wheels got more traction as it slowed down, DAMHIK.

One thing I have noticed is that modern traction control does things that actively work against your input.

Been many a time the rear has gotten loose in slippery weather, I steering into it, traction control kicks in and the vehicle starts to get out of line big time. The only solution there is to get out of it, or lobotomize the traction control.

Yes, forgot about ESC (Electronic Stability Control) now even on some motorcycles.

possibly clipping the 60ft timer ? shruggy
it usually boils down to a [semi ?] high performance car and a low performance driver.
i wonder if unhooking the front or rear sway bar would help keep these cars from the "left turn Clyde........" syndrome ?

Have an 06 GT stick shift. I've heard it called the mustang curse. Something to do with the wheelbase is the best guess I have heard. All I know is drive very carefully if you go through water or are in the rain. I've had the car take off 2X since I've owned it starting in 2015. Raced a lot and this was all on the street after going through a puddle. Hit second gear and off to the left I went. Best I could do was countersteer and get off the gas. Happened extremely fast.

They come by it naturally. Especially leaving car shows...

I never had this happen on my Mustang, 96. But it was just a v6 model, so low performance enough to match the skills of the driver? lol

On Mustang GTs and above you can turn off traction control

Yes, cause you have all the time in the world to do that when it happens.

I felt pretty bad for this guy. Must have been a horrific experience. Still got a little laugh out of the wipers going off just after the air bag deployed. You want to see clearly what kind of mess you're in!

Re: Do all Mustangs come standard with Autocrash installed? - 03/25/23 11:02 PM

You would think the people at track have launched the car hard many times before going to track and know the feel of the car, rwd, etc. and know how to recover from oversteer. The suspension doesn't appear stock, but I might be wrong. It seemed to hook up well. Front end didn't lift much but rear didn't squat either.

Edit: It did look like it was at shift point.

if you want to launch your s197 mustang straight at the track install one of these rear roll bars. .
https://www.bmrsuspension.com/?page=products&productid=792&superpro=0

i have one on my car. paid $400 for it in 2008. only use it at the track. .
run 1.4 60ft times with mid to low 10's @ 140+ mph. launches straight every time when i launch at 4.5 K rpm on bias slicks. if i could shift better probably hit 9's

Re: Do all Mustangs come standard with Autocrash installed? - 03/26/23 03:24 AM

It sure looked like the car whipped the driver's ability, but its also a possibility something broke at the shift. After the crash, it could be pretty to look at the screwed up car to find what got broke during the crash, or what might have broke causing the crash.
For that driver, the unfortunate thing is that so many published Mustang videos that ended in a crash was mostly caused by the driver's inability to handle the car's output.

Apparently you race in slippery weather? I wasn't talking about this particular crash., or mudstains in particular but rather modern cars with "traction control" in normal daily driving, which a lot of mudstain wipeouts appear to happen as well.
