Gowen field in Boise is a base for the A10 planes. If you drive near the freeway at the right time they will fly right over you when they go in and out. They have their own unique sound too.

My neighbor Matt is a mechanic on them at the Boise base. I have been asking him to give me a tour of the facility.

A10s are based near us at Davis Monathon Airbase.

They fly over my house on a semi regular basis...... and at a fairly low altitude btw

We also have the 192nd fighter squadron with the F16s as well.

So pretty cool to see fly overs on a regular basis

cool

I also have a once fired A-10 GAU-8 30mm shell casing. It's loaded with an inert replica alum projectile. Can't decide to paint it API or HEI in color.

I've never heard of the AFB, where is it in relations to downtown Boise?
I can't remember now the big AFB southeast of Boise about 20 miles whiney shruggy

Mountain Home is the large AFB--about 40 mi outside of Boise.

Gowen Field is just the local airport with a small Air National Guard unit living there.

I've seen these rigs multiple times over the last several decades- every time is still like the first. Near the mason-dixon line and VA border, Chambersburg PA, as well as near Harrisburg PA, and Ft. Indiantown Gap. I worked with an individual who lived in Fairchild for years in the neighborhood they built to house the pilots, mechanics, and general assemblers of the aircrafts, including the titanium tubs.

We had two or three A-10's fly low and slow over our Indiana property a few years back while I was outside. They are so freaking cool..... the gear whine was a sound I will never forget!

For years the Air Force Reserve flew cargo planes directly over the shop, then switched to KC-135s. They would fly low and slow over the tree tops...the low rumble of five of these monsters was awesome. The kids would hear the rumble and come out from the house or shop or wherever, run to the shop and wave as they flew over. I had a military guy who flew on several of those flights stop by one day and say that when the leads crested the tree line, they'd see the two rows of shop lights and line up with them, knowing the kids were there somewhere. An incredibly cool show from some great guys (and ladies, I would imagine). It's always amazed me that planes THAT BIG could glide in the air that slow.

Thanks, I've landed at and tied my airplane down at the commercial Bosie airport on the south east side of Boise, is that the same air field where the ANG A 10 are?
I was privilege to see a live fire demonstration at Edwards AFB by two A10s back in the late 1970s or maybe even in early 1980s on one of their open house days, they shot around 300 to maybe as high as 500 rounds into a target out on the dry lake near enough for us spectators to see boogie They made several firing passes each, two planes, and it seemed that when they fire that canon the airplane stood still or even look like it was backing up shock shruggy
BRRRRUp, BRRRUp and a whole lot of dirt exploded and flew up into the air out there in the dry lake up
That weapon is infantry mans best friend boogie up

The A10s fly out of Davis Monthan AFB, they are regular Air Force. See them pretty much every day over Tucson.

Most of the F16s are Arizona Air Guard planes flying out of Tucson International Airport. Also a common site here.

The A10 is basically a heavily armored flying gattling gun. The plane was designed around a 30mm cannon. It was designed to kill Russian tanks invading Europe.

Gowan has many activities going on. It is a Joint base, Army and AF. On the air side you have A-10s. On the army side you have Army Aviation, not sure if there’s Apaches still there. In addition to that is an extension of the Army Armor School. Given the courses it’s probably equal to Ft Benning. They have the newest M1 Abrams, Bradlys, possibly Strykers.

They provide transition courses on the M1 and Bradly, conduct new equipment training, Tank Commander/Bradly Commander Training, 19D Calvary Scout training and numerous other courses. All the cadre there are active duty and conduct the training in accordance to TRADOC standards.

I believe it’s also home to Heavy Armor Brigade

Those were the days...
I was stationed at England AFB, LA from '87 - '90. The 23rd Fighter Wing had 3 squadrons of A-10's. That was a fun assignment, for many reasons; the A-10's being just one of them.

On a side note, the military has decided to buy an updated version of the F-15 (F-15X). I've always wondered why they didn't modernize the A-10. Those things are tough as nails! I'm sure the answer is mission related, but I just love those planes.

Re: Some A-10 goodness - 02/09/23 07:43 PM

i think there were plans back in the 1980s to decommission all of them until they were use in the Iraqi gulf war conflicts. I remember seeing some video of one of them landing with the right engine blown apart by an anti-aircraft rocket.
Tougher than the best Russian anti ground to air missiles bow up
I think the Army has spent their upgrade money on new ground attack and support helicopters work scope

Hey Mike I was just up the road from you at Barksdale AFB '86-91. We also had A-10's a reserve unit along with B-52's, KC-10's, KC-135's and a few T-38's. Fell in love with Louisiana's culture and food. The A-10's were very unique aircraft cool sound flying overhead.

First time we ever drove through Boise was back around 1982. Idaho Air Guard was still flying F-4's. Saw, and heard, two taking off while we were driving by. Man those suckers were loud! smile
