Grizzly Mills

Anybody have a source for obsolete Grizzly mill parts? I have a chance to buy a used G9902 Grizzly for a reasonable price but I can't find a parts supplier for that model. All Grizzly says is "discontinued, no longer available" for virtually anything and I would hate to end up with a ton of garage art.

i dont have any experience with a grizzly mill but i can tell you that the grizzly wood working products are not good for any kind of production shop, buy a used american made if thats what you intend to do with it.

in my opinion, i would save up a little more and buy a bridgeport. there is such a difference in quality, you will be glad you went this route.

If I could get a single phase Bridgeport that hadn't had all the life ran out of it for $3000, I would. But........

I talked with the old guy that owns a big machine shop awhile back about if he had any. He said they’re getting scarce because they’re being bought up for parts. He’s having to go to Europe to find one of any of the good brands. Vertical mill is my last piece I need too, but I want a biggg one, big table and a lot of vertical room.

If your doing production work or using it regularly then I'll agree on the bridgeport. But if it's occasional hobbyist type use I have had good luck with the imports both lathes and vertical mills. Taking care of them with lubrication etc. is part of it. My 25 year old 9 x 42 Enco (now MSC) is doing fine. But I'm not typically looking for .0005 tolerance's. However I did just that a few days ago with no problem.
you will also likely find that the imports are direct copies of the BP. Might join and post on some of the hobbiest machine forums

Thanks to everyone. I was just hoping that somebody had an obsolete Grizzly mill and had found a source of parts.

I see a lot of them on Facebook marketplace. I had some extra cash in my pocket last year and was searching for a mill. At 66 I’ve held off but I did pick up a very nice valve seat machine that I will be better off with. A friend offered me a Bridgeport for under 2000.00 that looks great. Who knows what the future will hold. Lol.

Bridgeports are out there, in good condition, for 3k and under. a guy just has to be at the right place at the right time.
as to the 3 phase motor, i have converted several to single phase motors. it's not that hard to do. there are also phase converters a guy can use as well.
my preference is apparent, as that is what i used every day at work. i also prefer digital read outs, and i worked to the two ten thousandths tolerance most of the time.
with that said, an off shore brand most likely will do what a tinkering around hobbyist needs done.
be advised, however, to look the machine over very closely. just because it seems like a good deal dollar wise, make sure you can get repair parts. i have seen guys destroy machinery simply because they don't know what they are doing.
be wary if there are gouge marks in the hold down slots. the ways can be gacked up easily by running the right cutter into them. these marks can also damage the spindle as well.
a dial indicator will be your best friend when buying a used mill or lathe.
just my opinion from a 45 year machinist career, and still practicing to this day. your mileage will vary.

Not being sure exactly what parts you need, I just goggled grizzly G9902 replacement parts and the first result was LINKY

While they show many parts as NA, to the left they show a "REPLACED BY PART # and to the R a green box that says show replacement. they also have a tech support you can call if you haven't already.
If that fails
Try Googling machinist forums, hobbyist machining forums etc., they like Moparts, have a wealth of knowledge and you're likely to find a source or substitute for the parts

that's right TJP. if a person can get the numbers from most any brand machine, it's possible to find out lots of info.
i just searched out info on an old M head Bridgeport yesterday for a buddy of mine. he needed an exploded view of the pulley head so he could disassemble his.
he is in the process of replacing the spindle bearings [i have them coming tomorrow], tightening up the ways [simple adjustment], and a fresh coat of paint.
sometimes it takes a bit, but info is out there, even for the oddest or oldest, of equipment.

you can check with wttool.com, alot of these 9x49 knee mills are pretty much the same. it depends on what parts you need to replace.
