Ford oil filter

I have a 72 or 73 351 Cleveland motor in My 49 Ford pickup. The oil filter is mounted stock parallel to the ground just as My BB mopar. Removing the filter on the mopar gushes oil out of the filter and makes a mess. I removed the filter from the Ford and there was evidence of oil in it but less than an ounce dribbled out. If the oil drains back to the pan, wouldn't that give a false oil level reading on the dipstick? Is this normal ops for a 351 ? As a side note..the motor is only a 2bbl setup but it runs as sweet as any motor I ever had. As good as My BB mopar. Thanks in advance to all. I have used a bunch of Motorcraft FL1A filters on BB Mopars. Never a problem and they are a fraction the cost of Wix. They used to be identical internally to Purolator for less money.

I have never seen so little oil come out of a filter when changing it. I changed the oil and filter this afternoon. Put 5 qts in initially and started it up...ran for a minute or so past it reaching full oil pressure. Shut it down and topped it off. Stick read full. Came back 3 hours later and the stick showed a qt over.

obviously that's drainback. never had a wix that didn't have drainback issues. try a purolator. always thought motorcraft were good but haven't used them in years. k&n have drainback issues too.

The anti drain black rubber flapper valve inside those filters are working good

Do not change the oil filter your using. They are great filters, robustly designed with really good media inside and a top mounted drainback, unlike a lot of filters which use the bottom mounted drainback

Like CAB said the drainback valve could be working and that's why you aren't loosing oil or if you do not have a drain back valve in the filter it may be draining back into the pan.

If you think it is a drain back issue try a wix filter and see if it changes. You can pull the filter just to check without changing it.

They are usually orange and usually visible through holes in the filter.
