Computer or internet related question

Computer or internet related question - 04/07/22 06:24 PM

I go on the Newsmax website every day and look at the comments posted after reading each article I am interested in. Suddenly starting yesterday, when I click on the view comments tab nothing happens. No comments appear at all. However, when I go to Newsmax on my phone I can view comments and also post a comment. I don't know what could have happened with my computer. I've never had a problem viewing the comments on Newsmax on my computer before and I haven't changed any settings or downloaded anything in quite some time. I was able to view the comments just fine the day before yesterday. I cleared out all the cookies on my computer and that didn't change anything. Does anyone have an idea on what may have happened?

Maybe your browser is "protecting you" from reading the comments, IE censoring the Newsmax input according to their vision of free speech? The google system would do that.

try another browser like Duckduckgo and report back your results.

I tried that already and the comments still won't load. I'm sure the comments are not loading due to something to do with my computer but I don't know what it could be. I was reading the comments the night before, shut the computer off like normal and the following morning when I turned it back on I couldn't view them. I didn't change a thing on the computer during the time in between.

Are you using the same browser on your phone or are you using an app?

Same browser, Google. My wife also has Google on her Ipad and I can view the comments on it.

Basically the website may be using your MAC info. and cookies to determine what you can display / view, via a specific MAC address for that device. Also your browser settings would need to be reviewed in detail to determine the differences between your phone and your home computer. You could research this further through Google searches and policies, but most likely there is at least one setting amiss on the home computer browser or applied policies.
Alternatively you could do a uninstall and a fresh install of the browser software on the home computer. Compare the browser release versions installed on both the phone and the home computer. Compare the policies in force for each machine, and note differences, make revisions accordingly then try viewing comments after restarting your home computer.

Update: When I attempt to read comments on NewsMax.com - I am redirected to a LOGIN page - meaning that I must either create an account or LOGIN to an existing NewsMax account. Is your phone already Logged into an existing NewsMax account while your home computer is not ?

I also tried doing a system restore back to before this started happening and it didn't fix the problem either.

Number 1 --- LOG OFF / LOG OUT of the NewsMax account on all three devices. NEVER - EVER leave an account like that or on any other website per- - LOGGED IN.

You are exposing yourself to serious compromise by keeping your account login active / logged in. News websites among many other commercial websites are active targets by criminals and nation state actors who target these websites to retrieve your credentials - and thus potentially direct attacks at you. Your PII can possibly be gleaned from the info. you leave at NewsMax in the form of your email address, your MAC address, and others. A determined actor can hijack your NewsMax account and pose as you thereby compromising your digital reputation - identity.

Exercising proper security posture requires you give up some level of convenience.

Make 100% certain that ALL of your electronic devices including your phone - home computer (s) - et all ... are fully updated, completely patched with all relevant security updates BEFORE going back to NexsMax.

BTW since you continue to have some issues reading comments at the website on your home computer - are you running a supported OS and do you perform regular and routine patch management activities for this machine ?

Re: Computer or internet related question - 04/09/22 04:25 PM

I tried something different today. I deleted Google Chrome off of my computer and reinstalled it with an older version (just Google not Google Chrome) that I copied from our old computer. I logged into Newsmax and was able to view comments so I thought all was good. Then a window popped up that was from Google suggesting to update to Chrome which I did and now access to comments is gone again. I have looked through every setting, etc. in my Google account and I see nothing that looks like it would cause this problem but it is obviously Chrome related. The only thing I see different is when I go on Newsmax, there is a symbol down on the right-hand corner of the page that when I click on it, it says I have blocked notifications and is from something called Onesignal.com. This was not there for the moment I had just plain Google. I don't know if this is causing my problem or not but I don't see any way of deleting it. If it is provided by Chrome as a plugin, it is not listed as one in my account settings so I don't see how to get rid of it.

Maybe try allowing pop ups on that site? Could be the comments try to open in a pop up? I think Chrome automatically blocks those. It's under settings in Chrome

If you use anything from old google, you have to lock out the updates completely, or all the old stuff is gone. With the updates, you allow them to track what you look at so they can "offer things you are interested in" (better known as steel your info to sell to advertisers), it also lets them censor what ever they don't want you to see. There is no stepping up one step at a time, any update goes right to the most modern version available and removes the old in one quick easy step.
