Interesting - the push for EVs by proponents always tries to sell the reduction on carbon emissions and carbon usage in general. The truth is that the EV is not the pure green energy alternative that proponents tout. While tailpipe emissions favor the EV solution, the rest of the story is that the creation of batteries with all the attendant rare earth mining, and all the rest of the life cycle of the battery - the charging infrastructure - disposal and so on - favors ICE vehicles.

We need an open discussion about this - but it's probably too late at this point. The only alternative to avoid EVs - don't buy them unless they fit a specific use case that works for you.

interesting article in WSJ Thurs March 23 page B12
on the French company Air Liquide,
one of the top three world hydrogen producers, along with Linde and Air Products & Chemicals.

Most hydrogen today is made from either coal or natural gas and known os “Blue” hydrogen.
All the big three are investing in making more “Green” hydrogen in the future from electrolyzing water.

Big future markets are hoped to be making steel from iron ore, and cement.
Land hydrogen fueled vehicles and airplanes to come later.

Looking at the reasonably solid future of hydrogen as a power source, given the reasons mentioned here, it can be a good long term investment.
I bought Plug Power (PLUG) at $0.75 per share. Their HQ is a couple of miles from our house.
Fun stuff.

Having worked with hydrogen in the semiconductor industry, it's very leaky. Careful attention to sealing joints is important.

Yes, the green agenda folks never want to tell the WHOLE story . . . and they won't listen to anyone that is ! . . . for hydrogen - why not put up the wind and solar, use that "green" DC energy to break up water into Hydrogen and Oxygen ?? . . . course the issue is there are always losses when you convert from one form of energy to another . . . but again, no one wants to talk about that ! . . . oh, and what about the water ? Aren't we facing drought conditions in west ??? . . . again, time to think of using that "green" wind & solar energy to power desalination plants along the coast - biggest source of water !!! . . then put the desalinated water back into aquifers, etc . . .

You can use electrolysis on seawater, so a drought in the west is not a factor. Problem is, that is the expensive way to do it right now. Add in the lesser power created when using hydrogen instead of gasoline and it's even more expensive to generate the same power levels. You have to burn more of the more expensive hydrogen to match gas HP levels.

In a dedicated race car, such as the one mentioned in the video, with a well trained crew versed in the idiosyncrasies of hydrogen it works, after a fashion. The average shop? Well look at electric cars, they don't have enough trained techs that know electricity to handle that and hydrogen has it's own batch of issues. All this can be addressed, but it will not be a smooth transition regardless.

Any Canadians know what happens to the hydrogen and oxygen gas left over when Candu design nuclear power stations electrolyze water to separate out the “heavy water” needed as a moderator in their reactors?
