Driving into Canada

Hello all
I need to get into Canada to retrieve some parts. Two questions.
Has anybody been in and out lately? My understanding is I need to upload a negative COVID test into the arrive Can app along with vaccine card and get to the crossing within 72 hours . Does anyone know if this is correct? And if so what about coming back?

I purchased some sheet metal from a private seller . Will border patrol try to charge a duty fee?

I suppose I could have them shipped (2 hard to find 1/4 panels ) but worried about loss or damage and I’m only 7 hours away

Any duties will be levied on the U.S. side, The chances are slim to nil they will want duty. Tax is more likely but the chances are still slim to nil. Either way, it won't be much.

So where would you be travelling to ??

There is conflicting info and it seems a lot is geared to flying in not driving.

Was hoping someone had real life experience.

The parts are in Stittsville Ontario. Was told to cross at Ogdensberg . But some online info says it it is closed .

There are no major highways to Ogdensburg. You'd be better off crossing into Quebec (not Quebec city!) and shooting up to Ottawa from there. All major highways. Stittsville is just outside Ottawa.

Shoot over to Albany, up to Montreal and then to Ottawa. If you take the 30 before going into Montreal it bypasses the city and will save you a bunch of time.

From my understanding, you need a negative COVID test (I think only a certain kind is accepted) within 72 hours prior to crossing, upload and apply on the Arrive CAN app, and subject to random on site testing when you cross. The biggest hurdle is getting into Canada. Once you get in, getting home is fairly easy. You are a US Citizen, they can not deny your return. If you have parts, depends on where they are made and value if duty is collected. There is no tax on those items, just duty. Tax is more for alcohol and tobacco products. Best to call each port you will be crossing on the US and Canadian side to ask details.

This is all correct . I have a test appointment for the required test on Thursday takes 1-2 days for results that I then upload to arrivecan with my vacs info .

So using mapquest its telling me to cross at Alexandria bay via us 81 and then Canada 401 . 7.5 hours as opposed to heading up to Montreal 8.50 hours. I"ll be getting up there around rush hour.

Any thoughts ?

If Ogdensburg/Prescott is open it is the most direct route to Ottawa. We live in the area and that's where we always cross. If that's the route google or GPS wants you to take go for it.

Ogdensburg/Prescott border crossing is open 24 hours and would be my choice due to border crossing traffic volume.

I'd take I-91 north from CT up to I-90 to Albany NY and stay on I-90 to Utica NY.

You could then stay on I-90 west to Syracuse NY, then north on I-81 right up to the Alexandria Bay, NY border, once in Canada take 401 east,

then 416 north to Ottawa.

Or... at Utica , you could head north from Utica on 12, runs into 26 north at Lowville, NY and straight on to the Alex Bay border.

I have travelled both ways... takes about the same time, 12 and 26 is more scenic.

But... if I was doing the 26 north, I'd catch 37 east to Ogdensburg border crossing into Canada.

The reason being , it is a smaller border point, less traffic than Alexandria Bay crossing into Canada which is quite busy.

And as stated the Ogdensburg crossing is basically a direct run into Ottawa when you get on 416 north in Canada.

I was reading that ogdensburg was closed some odd hours for bridge repairs. Didn’t want to get there and have to reroute

According to The US Government - Canadian Border Crossings are currently closed.

If anyone actually manages to cross into or out of Canada
then perhaps they can share their firsthand experience here.

Only closed to Canadians. U.S. citizens can pretty much come and go as they please. We opened our borders a couple weeks back - the U.S. has not.

Hey everyone thanks for all the help. Went into Ottawa yesterday and picked up the 1/4s. Heading back home tomorrow morning.

6 1/2 hours with stops .
