Today We Lost #11 - Tigers' Bill Freehan: - 08/19/21 07:36 PM

He was my favorite MLB player of all time - I met him once back in 1968 at a local mall & he signed my catchers mitt, which I still have today. Goodbye Bill Freehan - thanks for giving me someone to look up to, & a high bar to always try & get over.

Just saw McClain on the news this morning commenting on the Jack Morris controversy. He is huge.

Don't know where Denny is living these days or what he is doing. Where I grew-up, we moved there in 1964 - it was a new subdivision in Livonia, MI. Denny McClain lived in a house at the end of our block, Tiger's Dick McAuliffe lived behind a buddy Paul just a few houses down from us. Kinds cool having a couple Tigers living right in our vicinity, I never saw either of them though. They moved just a few years later probably to Bloomfield or somewhere more ritzy. The 60's were wonderful.

The mid 90s ? ... is when I had sporadic socialization with DM. I remember ONE TIME seeing some anger from him ... asking him what his talents would be worth TODAY eek

Last I knew he had some big acreage just off 59 in Brighton.

A year or two earlier he lost his daughter in an accident ON 59 .., it really tore him up frown

I just saw this in the news he was one of the greats. Before my time but I certainly knew who he was a great player and spent his entire career with the Tigers and those days seem to be gone forever. R. I. P. 🐯

One of the most memorable plays I can remember is Freehan blocking the plate on Lou Brock and tagging him out in Game 5 of the '68 world series.

Bill Freehan was (and still is IMO) an iconic institution in Detroit. I would talk to Mickey Lolich in the early 90's... when he owned Lolich's Donut and Pastry shop in Lake Orion. I would ask about his and Bills relationship, and he would always speak fondly of Bill, and his undying commitment to Detroit Tigers baseball. His shop had many pictures on the walls, of him and Bill, and the Detroit Tigers from their glory days. My thoughts and prayers go to Mr. Freehans family. R.I.P. #11 the greatest catcher ever for the Tigers. angel
