GTX from my younger days...

GTX from my younger days... - 04/14/21 05:13 AM

We pulled this from the junkyard we worked at. Mr. Z, the yard owner, paid $75 for it and sold it to Archie for that amount. It came into the yard missing the hemi and four speed, and in place of the Dana was an 8 3/4. But still... it was a GTX. We pulled a 383 from a Charger in the yard, Mr. Z charged us a whopping $25, with auto trans. Arch drove the car for a while, and his wife sold the car to his brother when Arch was killed in a horrific car accident. Rick drove the car as-was for several years, then decided to sell everything to buy a house. Louie, one of the gang, couldn't bear to see Archie's car leave the group, so he bought it from Rick. Louie sourced a correct hemi and trans, and put the car in one of his storage buildings... and that's where it's been sitting for decades. Louie passed away about a year ago (massive heart attack) and his widow is cleaning up the place. As much as I'd love to have the car, I don't want to spend that kind of money just to have it sit in one of MY buildings, so I can look at it and reminisce about being 16, working in both junk yards in town, and playing with cool cars from the yard..... (and yes, I did buy way too many other cars and parts from this building)

In it's former life, it was a hemi 4speed Dana disc brake bucket seat console car.

That quite the story that goes along with the car and I am sorry to hear about both your buddies. Crazy how much old cars had stories to go along with them where you don't have that as much now it seems. We don't have unique cars like this that are found at junkyards and rebuild multiple times and sold between friends anymore. They just cars now that are driven and go to the junkyard as just junk and one of 50k+ built so nothing special.

Is the car still sitting in the barn looking for a new owner? If so pm me some information on it as depending on information on it I would be interested in keeping it moving and back on the road.

Sorry to hear of both your friends passing. frown
Cool story and reminds me of my '67 GTX. Mine was a 440, 4 spd. in LL1 w/ black interior and no console. Sold it in '81 after our first child came along. Recently I was at a going-out-of-business sale at a body shop and found the owner was selling a GTX. Unfortunately it wasn't my old one.
Hopefully someone buys this one and restores it. up

Cool story. We've got a GTX one as well, but fortunately nobody passed away. Late 1980/early 1981 I spotted a '69 440/4sp B5 convertible GTX at a local used car lot (where a McDonald's sits today). It was out of my price range. A few weeks later I saw the car again, this time with a friend of mine in the passenger seat with the new owner. May 1, 1982 the new owner drove us away from our wedding in the GTX. In the late 1980s he sold the car to a friend of his who became a friend of mine. Saw the car this past Sunday at our club picnic. Almost done with the restoration. I made a comment to Norm about how cool it is to see the cars from our younger days still around as there aren't that many.

thanks for sharing the story and the pics.

The other cars I can see in the pics are not half as interesting so hopefully you bought something else
