There is a signal on the tape that dictates playback speed at the speed it was recorded at. I don't know the layout on the tape itself, but the circuitry on the VCR may be the malfunction. Try another machine.

Thx JL ... it HAS to be something like that ! ... I’ve never gotten a straight answer out of even local repair shops ... asking for a friend !

Can it be just a really extensive cleaning of the tape travel ?

I’ve heard that doing these two things PLUS adding two HF PuttsBurger WORBLE extensions between the ears should improve the signal ....

I heard that through the grapevine from that apimp who is jsta north of Coder !

Maybe, but I think it's a circuit problem. Brand new VCRs are available on Amazon, but aren't cheap...

I had no idea they still made them, let alone that they were expensive. We're throwing ours away, along with all of our VHS tapes. It works fine, but we never use it.

Don't throw it away. There is a market for good working units, especially the really good four-head stereos units. I'd like to have a couple more good working ones, but I'm not really in the market at the moment. I bought 10 or 12 Beta machines a few years ago. About half of them work good.

I wanted to transfer some VHS tapes of family movies to DVD and then to flash drives.
I have used GoVideo and Funai (Magnavox) units with VHS on one side and DVD on the other.
The Funai units have HDMI outputs and have an additional 1.5 hour DVD record mode.
Units like the GoVideo and Funai seem to go for about $20 in thrift stores.
If the remote control is missing Dishnetwork remote controls can run them by looking up the correct code.

There is a noticeable video noise reduction “cleanup” when transferring from analog VHS to digital DVD.

These machines will reject cheap mainland china made blank DVDs and need Japan or Taiwan made blank DVDs for success.

If you then play the newly made DVD in a modern Bluray player there is a further video noise reduction.

Vupoint units can transfer VHS to SD cards.

I digitize to my computer and edit the video before I put it on any media or the internet. I have the ability to do Beta, 8mm (tape, not film), VHS, mini DV, and Umatic (3/4" professional stuff). I NEED the ability to transfer 1" reel to reel video tape, but those machines are hard to find. I've got 25 more 1" tapes to do...
