I wonder if the new gears from brewers for $44 are the same as the $27 LA gears?

I bought quite a few gears from these guys for Mopars and GM trans. All looked good and fit good and you can't beat the prices Some of the vendors are asking crazy money for the 3X number gears.

Hey, so if you all don't mind - can you school me a little on speedo gears?

What I have is a speedo that reads high by about 10%.
So the existing gear is spinning too fast.
I'm pretty sure that means I should try a gear with 10% more teeth?

When I pull the existing gear out to count its teeth, is that a dry location, or will the tranny fluid want to leak out?
Thanks,

That is correct, you need more teeth on the gear. If the car is level or if the nose is down a little there shouldn't be any fluid coming out. Jack up the rear axle for clearance to get under the car and you should be fine. The FSM has a chart showing which speedo gears are used with which rear gears and tires.

I have a box of used gears that I've pulled out of 727 transmissions over the years. Guess that is my retirement fund now!

your 10% is roughly correct. however, it could factor out to one tooth higher or lower than is available.
as to changing out the gear, jack up the driver's side of the car and support on stands.
the area is wet, and this will greatly minimize, if not entirely eliminate the fluid loss.
have a pan under just in case, to keep your floor clean.

67, here is a chart to help you choose the correct speedo gear, based on tire size and rear gear ratio. I don't know if the correlation of 10% speed off on the speedo is going to equal needing 10% more teeth. That sounds like a large jump in number of teeth, unless you have a low 20s # then it isn't as big as a jump compared to a 30s #. This is just me thinking though. If you can tell us what your gear ratio is and tire diameter now, plus what tooth count gear is in there, it would help.

Thanks very much for the detailed info guys, that is super helpful..

I've got the 1965 FSM, and will have a closer look at it along with the chart in the link:

- I know I've got a 2.76 rear end, and running 225/70 14s = diameter of 26.4" ... so the chart suggests 27 or 28 teeth.

I'll have to pull the existing gear to get its number of teeth for comparison.
It's in winter storage already but I can bring a jack and try getting that done.

Cheers,
