72 Charger color help, can't decide

72 Charger color help, can't decide - 08/18/20 02:55 AM

I bought a 72 Charger with 79,000 original miles. The paint is all original, what is left of it. It was green with a white canopy top and white interior. I can't stand the green sooo, I can't decide on a color. I like bright red with black top and interior, my wife likes purple with white top and interior. I have considered triple black but know the problems with black cars. Also considered blue with either white or black top and interior. I've looked at pics until I'm dizzy and still undecided. What do fine folks suggest to help me with this problem? And don't say sell it to you LOL.

Paint it white and put a new white top on it.

i would put the helephant motor in this car. add a 6 speed TR6060 trans.
because of the modern drivetrain use a current color you like from the charger lineup.
i would probably use a 3 stage color.

FJ6 (which IMO looks great on that body) with the white guts and a full black vinyl top, with bulge hood....I also vote for the Helaphant engine and 6 spd, with a Dana 60....and NO goofy 18 or 19" wheels.. tsk

I agree with burnt orange, but no vinyl top.

I would 'just say no' to re-sale red. I probably wouldn't do purple as I've never been a fan of hi-impact colors on years when they weren't offered, but that's just my silliness - it just never seemed right to me.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm probably not the right one to be answering this, because I like green... wink

That said, I've always liked Blue Streak (Petty blue) on these cars:

For some reason I've been drawn to the more unique colours of the time period, like Tawny Gold... when done right it comes alive in the sun.

In the end, though, you have to decide what makes you happy. If read is it, then go for it.

The current B5 blue would look very nice on that car.

You've got time, as it's nowhere near ready for paint in that photo.
Darker colors of course visually shrink the mass, and as long as you're changing the color, you could consider late-model colors.
Or for that matter, earlier: E1, B7, Q5, R6...
Maybe something that nobody else has done, though I'd want it to be a more subtle & "classy" color if it were mine.
"Gunmetal" looks good on that body style.
I like the "pop" of a white interior, but a VT on those cars makes the cab look smaller & rather disproportionate to my eye.
Take your time deciding, maybe a color book from a paint jobber would help.
I have some of those I can send you if you like.

I was always partial to the '71 ad with the red/white top/white gut combo. thumbs

I also love lemon twist yellow. That with a white interior would be sharp.

I second the vote for Petty Blue with white interior.

My cousin had a 71 that was purple with a white top and white gut. 440, 4 speed console, ramcharger hood, machine gun tips, rt tail lights, front/rear spoilers. It was a STUNNING car.

As I’ve gotten older I have grown tired of the bright colors and gravitate towards more “tuxedo” type metallic colors.....silvers, golds, etc. my current truck is a Ram in brown saddle metallic pearl. I would loved to have gotten my Scatpack wb in that color with silver stripes and argent wheels. Unfortunately it wasn’t offered.

if you go modern drivetrain swap. then maybe a modern take on a classic color.
maybe the current plumb crazy or the B5 blue.

I found the build sheet under the back seat along with some checkers and 22 cents. This car is so original I'm not sure I want to alter it from what it once was. The color is still killing me though LOL. It's optioned pretty good too. I love the look of black on these and that would be an easy color to spray one panel at a time. Wondering how a white canopy top and white interior would look with a black car?

Black really suits the "2 liter coke bottle" styling of these cars makes the lines sleeker in appearance IMHO, lighter colors tend to amplify the large "hips" the girl has.... white interiors are sharp!

I owned this car twice. In these photos, it's wearing original paint. (I bought the car in Phoenix, AZ. back in 1985).

I dunno, when it's fresh I sure don't hate it! And yeah, I lived through the '70s, back when they ALL seemed to be green... biggrin

This one looks like a really nice ride.

Well it looks like I have a Spring Special Topper X edition, numbers matching, never wrecked or been apart with an intact build sheet. So since it has survived almost 49 years as is, who am I to change it now. It will be painted back green and everything rebuilt back to it's former self. It was built Jan 24th 1972 in St Louis. Does anyone reproduce the plaid cloth seat covers?

Before you choose you should do your homework on interior trim availability. You might find that you're forced to go with a black interior because other colors aren't available. You might be able to find everything in white for that year but with my '72 Duster I was forced to use black rather than blue since most parts are not reproduced in blue.

I checked Legendary. The only pieces I can't get are the interior upper sail panels which I need, a green dash pad and the correct vinyl cloth seat covers. I can paint a black dash pad and the seats may have to be standard white vinyl. I have access to correct bucket seats, steering column, console and shifter for a 72 Charger if I want to go that route. I'm still on the fence but the old guy in me keeps telling me it's a survivor.

In 1970 my dad brought home a Nova that was almost the same shade as The Dodge/ Plymouth Gun Metal Gray.
It was a great color sedom seen then and now.
Not tgat it matters but I learned how to drive in that car.
230ci six 3 on the tree, manual drum brakes, and stearing am radio heat only car were only options.
P.overty Caps on Steel Wheels.
He added an under dash cassette player that also recorded
As the only add on.
I lived on the same street as the Chevy Dealer and saw all the new cars come in and get test driven or beat to death in the days of covering the windows of the show room with paper.
I hardly saw any gray cars come out the place. So think it is rare on most makes.
