Hine Motors history/info? - 05/21/20 07:39 PM

I was able to track down the original owner of my '67 Belvedere II and sent him a letter in early April. He gave me a call and we talked for about a half hour about the car. He told me he had taken it to Carlon Hine of Hine Motors and had him change the cam, carb & intake to the '68 383 spec cam, carb & intake.

Just curious to find out more about Hine Motors if anybody has info/pics, whatever. I did find out from my car's original owner that Carlon Hine ran a car called the "Honkin' Hemi".

I'd love to hear more if anyone has stories, pics or info.

You have a PM.

Carlon and his son are still doing some engine work. Mostly dirt track stuff. He had numerous Hemi drag cars through the years, in addition to other Mopar muscle cars. They were a Dodge dealer, but he also had a few Plymouths that came through his dealership from dealer to dealer trades or factory purchases. For what it's worth, they're still racing the original Honkin Hemi with long term driver Bill Pakula.

I remember Hines Motors well.As a teenager in the 60's.I think they were in Kinsman Ohio.I think I remember Hemi cars in the showroom.
Rocky should chime in because he remembers them too.

Somehow back about 12 years ago, my father and I managed to talk Jeff @ HRE, Carlon Hine's son, into rebuilding my 340 6-pack T/A engine. Like you said, they really only work contracts on dirt track cars these days. Apparently Jeff had a hankering for rebuilding a 340 6-pack.

I joined a Sunset Drag Strip Facebook group a few months ago because that’s where the car was run a lot and asked if anyone knew my car back in the day. I mentioned that Hine Motors worked on it. Jeff Hine is a member of the group and he didn’t remember the car and asked Carlon about it. He didn’t remember it either.

I plan to finish my 20-year resto on my Challenger T/A this summer. It is/was a father son project. Both my dad and I are getting up there in age, so it's now or never. We'll finish it in my dad's shop just around the corner from Hine Racing Equipment, and I definitely plan to show up at HRE and let Jeff take it for a ride if he likes. A man needs to inspect his work, right? Apparently Jeff is quite fond of T/As. Carlon is getting up there in age, assuming he's still around.

That car and the red 64 Honkin Hemi are not actually from Hine Motors. Those are both cars that Tony Depillo owns/owned that Carlin gave permission to paint and letter resembling Hine Motors cars. Pretty sure Carlin never owned or raced either one.

In1969 I bought a 1968 barracuda convertible 340 formula S automatic. A good friend of mine said we should go see Carlon Hine about building the engine for drag racing for fun. So we met Carlon late that summer and he made a few suggestions. The car turned mid-14's from the factory. I installed headers and better tires and dropped to the low 14's running J-stock.The following summer we took my engine up to Hine Motors and Carlon installed a mild cam. We dropped to the high 13's running H-stock. The muscle car bug bit me so I installed quite a few power boosting options and hit high 12's in SS-H. At one meet I saw Carlon and asked him to run the car for a pass to figure out a problem. He returned and said my points were floating right before I would shift. So over the winter I truly went radical running E/MP. Larry Atherton was running on the National record at 10.46 in a 340 Duster in California, so I called him to ask a few questions. He devised a cross-over oil system for the 340 which boosted the pressure significantly, allowing me to shift at a much higher rpm. I called Carlon and told him about it, and his simple comment was "Oil pressure is the most critical component in racing". There were too many modifications i made to mention here, but my best back to back times were: 11.88-11.98-12.02. Honkin Hemi was running low tens or better, and on a few occasions I'd get a thumbs up with a smile from a true racing veteran & legend who took time to teach an 18-19 year young Country Boy a little about drag racing. I'll be forever grateful to Carlon for his kindness, and to my dear friend Jerry Coleman for introducing me to Carlon and for supporting me in my racing endeavors. We have breakfast monthly and reminisce about those great muscle car days. Thats what I know about Carlon Hine and Honkin Hemi.

So I might also mention my 68 barracuda convertible was black over yellow, had a dual-quad tunnel ram under a black hood scoop, and had "Original Flying Machine" painted on the front fenders in black Gothic letters. While I was still running SS/H we would cruise Market St. in Y-town running anyone willing to race light to light. My best night...running in the high 12's, I ran 17 races and won them all light to light from 11pm until 3am. Thats the way my friend Jerry and I rolled back then...street racing was as exciting as strip racing. Dropped off our girlfriends at 11pm, then hit the streets....and for the record that same Gal of mine has been married to me for 50 years, with 3 children and 14 grandchildren...now THAT is the 'Paul Harvey'..the 'rest of the story'.

I knew Carlos personally and he told me when chevy or Ford set a record they would send him a car and say beat that record!!!
He did my engine in the 80s for my GTX that was running 10.40s,which was amazing back then !!!
This guy was a genius with head flow!!! And didn't get get recognition he deserved and I'm 99% sure Honkin Hemi was his originally, I seen at his shop and he told me this story. He started losing his eye sight and had to stop building!!!!
My 2 cents
