France advice: No Motrin or NSAID if COVID19 suspected - 03/15/20 08:03 PM

Sample quote

The coronavirus infection doesn’t necessarily have specific symptoms, and it can mimic cold or flu symptoms.

Treating headaches or fever with Advil, Ibuprofen, and any other similar NSAID drug might be the usual course of action for many people.

But French physicians discovered aggravated cases in COVID-19 patients who weren’t tested for the disease before using Ibuprofen to treat their symptoms at home.

The country is now advising all people to stop taking NSAIDs altogether to avoid side-effects in case of a potential COVID-19 infection.

Instead of Ibuprofen, you should take a paracetamol medication like Tylenol to treat fever. This drug won’t prevent the inflammatory responses of the body, a natural reaction that happens to fight the coronavirus after infection. By preventing inflammation, these drugs could mask the severity of a disease, and reduce the capacity of the immune system to deal with the pathogen.

Olivier Veran, the health minister of France, posted a warning on Twitter with the same message.
“Taking anti-inflammatory drugs (Ibuprofen, cortisone…) could be an aggravating factor for the infection. If you have a fever, take paracetamol,”
he said. Veran also advised patients to seek the advice of their doctors in case they’re already prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs for pre-existing medical conditions.

Why don't they use a term people know.

What, with out looking it up is paracetamol?

No one knows.

But if you google it you find out it's also called

tada

acetaminophen

Which we all know and probably already have.

I never take any of those drugs anyway for the reasons stated, they interfere with the bodies normal defense mechanisms. Plus if I'm injured and in pain then taking something that dulls that pain could cause me to do more damage to myself without knowing it.

iagree

But I do take a daily aspirin for preventive heart benefits for over 30+ years. Aspirin is a NASID.

I personally do not take anything for flu/cold symptoms. Same for other pains. I'm old school, and I figure my body knows best what temp it needs to be at to tackle the condition I have. I might be uncomfortable/grumpy/etc, and as long as it is not life threatening, I just ride it out.

Breathing issues would likely reconsider that.

Laying in the ICU in 2015 with so many things broken from hitting the concrete Jersey Barrier at 75 MPH on my motor scooter and then sliding on my back down the freeway 450 feet, that morphine button was my friend. They sent me home with 60 tabs of Oxycoten with 1 refill. I still have 55 tabs on the first fill.

I survived on a mix of Tylonal and Sodium Naproxen. You can take both at the same time.
