My cousin's kid is a doctor in the Polish Air Force. He is a LT Colonel. Think he will finally get out next year. My cousin retired as a Major for the Polish Air Force.

Fort Sill was a great place for an Army Base. UGLY landscape perfect for Military training with grenades, 105 Howitzers, M203 grenade launchers, etc. Great place to blow stuff up because you are actually making the place look better by doing it.

Re: Zoo Veterans, post some pics of you Back in the day - 11/12/17 07:17 AM

I think I'd posted this last year, but my mind is gone this morning. This is me, kneeling in the helo door, working the hoist. Picking up a heart attack victim who'd gone deep sea fishing in defiance of Dr's orders. This was 1972 0r '73.

HH52 #1409. I was called plane captain, which simply meant I had the lead in making sure the 1409 was always 100%, and had to be capable of fixing anything on it but the radios. Somehow I'd fooled them into thinking I was capable.

Loved that bird. Had painted "she's real fine my 409" inside on the hydraulic cabinet door. Blades were tracked perfectly. Smoothest flying helo of the 4 we had on base.

It's not apparent but it was 14 foot seas that day. Fun trying to drop the basket on the bow of that little boat.

He lived. The best part of the whole story: the guys you see in the back of the boat still had their poles in the water. They were not going to miss out on their fishing day!

Thanks to all protecting or freedom. Keep it up!

My grandfather lounging in Hitler's chaise in front of the fireplace given to him by Mussolini. After pops passed my family found a chunk of the marble fireplace in a bag back in his closet with a German pistol and leather Nazi holster. Even his wife never saw it as she would have thrown it all away.

I have a 1940 P-08, all matching numbers, 1 numbers mag as well, with holster and tool. Worth a pretty penny these days. You should research it.

I served USMC 2nd LSB, Grenada and Beirut 1983-84. No way to post pics, sorry.

I think he was in the 7th infantry. I don't know much about it but thought Ike wanted the French to liberate it w/ the 101, but they were not in position.

A local man I befriended was a combat engineer. They blasted the elevator shaft on orders- to close it up. Soon after a decision was made to replace the elevator (Army bureaucracy). The rebuilt the elevator system and on top of the car he made a sign saying compliments of..... listing his unit, with his personal signature.

Decades later, his dentist mentioned his upcoming vacation, with Eagles Nest as part of his plans. Van asked him to see if his sign was still placed atop the elevator. The dentist reported back that the tour guide arranged for a ladder and they popped the service door open. It was indeed still there.

He also described one of the concentration camps. a bunch of rail cars had padlocks on them- they didn't know what they contained. He put a little explosive on them and popped them off- opened the door to see the cars full of bodies. He likely was the first GI to see the result of the Holocaust. He mentioned a couple times about his Thompson barrel being red hot, and they didn't leave anything German alive, including the German Shepherd guard dogs.

That is a pretty cool thing for then to open it up and look for the sign.
Chilling but understandable about treatment of the Germans there.

One of my customers years ago in Roseburg Or. was Mack Pyle.. He was on the Battleship Nevada when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Can't say what he used to say about the Japanese.. He did say that at sea ( after the sneak attack) NO PRISONERS were taken..
