'68 Hemi 4-speed drivetrain ID stampings - 11/21/11 04:15 PM

Hey gang..
Not sure if an all-encompassing question has been posed, but I didn't find exactly what I was looking for.

Car: '68 Hemi Charger R/T 4-speed

Topic: ID stampings

Question: We all agree for the most part, that in '68, the VIN of the car was stamped on the block on the driver's side upper bellhousing mating area with the bellhousing of either the 727 or 4-speed stamped the same. Now, on a 4-speed, was the pad that's actually on the gearbox get stamped with the partial VIN "8B******" as well?

Cheers,
Troy

If the transmission was stamped with the partial vin (not all '68's were), it would be on the raised pad on the side of the transmission.

Here's a Hemi example. Concerning non stamped examples, FWIW I've never seen an original 68 Hemi car that did not have a stamped pad.

Thanks Scott...
To clear things up, the drivetrain was stamped with the partial VIN as opposed to the body panels being stamped with the VON in '68.

Yes, on a '68 "performance engine" - the block & 4-speed (or 727) will have the last 8-digits of the VIN# (NOT the Shipping Order Number, S.O.#, that is stamped on the body).

Here is the trunk lip body stamping from the same car. The core support number stamping matched but the engine was a replacement.

That sounds like a sequence number not the date, what are the 4 digits prior to those?

Just for kicks, what's your cars SPD and VIN sequence number?

Re: '68 Hemi 4-speed drivetrain ID stampings - 11/21/11 07:38 PM

Dash Vin# 225124

When I bought the car it had a 23 spline in it, I rebuilt the 18 spline I had under the bench, I guess I couldnt get much closer other than finding the #'s tranny. These 2 hemi cars passed by each other on the same line the same day!!

Holy Mackerel Scott!!!
The pictures of the tag and VIN you posted are of the car my friend's interested in !!!!! He asked me what I thought about the car since I used to own a '68 Hemi Charger R/T (you remember the LL1 I had I'm sure). I have other pictures of it together

You know any more about the car? PM me....

That's pretty darn cool! So, you are saying that you don't have the original numbers trans but the one you do have aligns perfectly with a different car with the very same SPD? What are the odds!

XS29x8B279428 spd 205 (2/5/68) & 4-speed trans assembly date 1/9/68 (440 or HEMI Charger R/T - if the trans has always been an 18-spline)

XS29J8B357735 spd 424 (4/24/68) & 4-speed trans assembly date 1/9/68

RS23J8G225124 spd 424 (4/24/68)

The Chargers were assmbled at Hamtramck - the GTX at St. Louis, but it is a simple example that "first in - first out" practices were NOT in use at the assembly plants.
11 weeks & just short of 80,000 cars were built at Hamtramck between the use of 2 transmissions built on the same day (44 units apart).

Of equal is the fact that you (without knowledge) posted a pic of the trans from the very car that the OP is posting about.

Psychic or psychotic? You choose.
