Need some paint codes/formulas for a 71 340 resto - 10/02/11 10:28 PM

I'm looking for the paint codes/ formulas for the restoration of my 71 Duster 340. My painters using PPG paint. I need the following:

- Paint instead of primer to duplicate the factory primer on the underside of the car

- Correct shade paint of orange for the 340

- Core support blackout paint

Is RestoRicks undercoating the best/ closest to factory?

To the best of my knowledge no such thing exists off the shelf, best to have a good paint shop attempt to match the original and do some spray out samples until you feel you have a match.

- Correct shade paint of orange for the 340

Frank Badelson sixpackfrank@aol.com sells it, requires a paint gun to apply, best off the shelf match I've seen, nobody will argue that Franks is right, it looks very authentic, however one step further would be to have your original blocks paint matched like the dip primer above.

- Core support blackout paint

Best I've seen, although applying it correctly is a key eliment of it looking the most correct

The paint for the bottom will have to be custom based off whatever shade of gray or black on the floor pans. On my 70 dart I mixed black and light grey PPG DP epoxy primer together until it was a decent match to the gray below the dip line behind the door and kick panels. Once I had something that I was comfortable with I did a test spray onto a piece of clean sheet metal and had the paint store mix up some flat gray paint that looks just like the primer.

No PPG code exists for the engine paint, at least my local guys can't find it. Many opinions on here on who makes the best version. Roger Gibson, Totally Auto, ect. seem to be the ones people bring up the most often.

Blackout paint? Organisol?

Resto Ricks undercoating is great stuff. You need an undercoating wand to apply it. I had the painter respray the insides of the quarter panels and the rear wheelwells and he ended up using the whole can. Not sure if that is normal, or if my guy wasted some of it, and doing a whole car with can is more like it. At any rate, I need another can for the front fender aprons and splash shields.

Neil, how big was your "can"? Quart or gallon? Mines an LA built car so there is only undercoating in the rear wheel wells. I'm thinking a quart would probably do it.

My painter works in the lab at Sherwin Williams so I'm sure he can get a VERY close mix on the underside. I will make sure he writes it down so others can use his formula. I'll ask him about engine paint too, although it might be easier to buy Franks.

I agree that you have to match what is on your car if you want to be authentic. I would imagine that even at the same plant the actual color varied from day to day. One story I heard is that this was where they dumped excess paint.

In doing my 71 CUDA, I used set of Federal standard, 595 paint chips and there were all sorts of shades of gray to choose from. I picked the one that matched the best and got it mixed in a semi-gloss industrial urethane. The spots I matched up were under the gas tank and under the transmission hump, these seemed to be the cleanest spots on my car. The color I chose seems to be a little darker than what I see most people putting on e-bodies but I know that I matched what was there as close as possible.

I'm not convinced this is the best way to match engine paint but I don't have a better one. My 340 was blue and the paint on the block over the years turned almost turquiose. If trying to match paint colors to what you have I would choose a piece of sheetmetal that saw the least amount of heat, possibly the rocker arm covers. I always keep my eye out for an early take off rocker arm cover or oil pan that saw very little heat to try and get the correct shade of blue.

A quart of the gray paint will cover the bottom by the time you add the reducer to it.

Sorry Neil I meant the size of can for the undercoating. But thats good to know for underside paint too!

The can got tossed out, but I as big as it was it had to have been a gallon.

When you buy stuff off Rick you have to call and give him your credit card # so ask him if one gallon is enough or not. If I hadn't redone the insides of the quarters I might have had enough to cover all four wheel wells.

Thanks Neil!

I found two really good areas that match, the back of the pass side valve cover and the throttle cable bracket. So he should be able to take the bracket in and get a formula from that.

Those look like good places to start, I'd reccomend taking as many nice pieces to the painter as you can, let him decide which will be most helpful. Usually the larger/flatter surfaces furthest away from hot spots (like exhaust etc.) and paint that measures the thickest (use a paint depth gauge) will be the most accurate colors to what shade it began life as.

paint matched like the dip primer above.

I've recently completed a new polyurethane paint match for the dip gray. Easy to spray, excellent moisture resistance & great durability with the correct satin gloss level and color match. I also have the red oxide primer color match & the light gray sealer color in the same polyurethane paint.
I still have to decide packaging sizes for the paints & hardener.

I swear that stuff seems thicker than the grey primer. Seems to hold up better too. Seemed pretty tough to glass bead off.
